I made this project while researching the hurricane of Galveston in 1900. Galveston was a Texan island in the Gulf of Mexico. Before the disaster, it was the biggest city in Texas, flourishing in economy and commerce, and its beautiful beach. In 1900, before the hurricane occurred, Cuba issued warnings to the U.S. about a hurricane headed to Texas. Dismissing it as malarkey, the U.S. made a mistake that would cost more than 6,000 lives. On September 12, 1900, the hurricane hit Galveston. Unequipped for such circumstance, ~6,000-12,000 people died, roughly a sixth of Galveston's population. Houses were ripped from their foundation, people drowned, and lives were lost. Albeit not the biggest hurricane to hit America, it was the deadliest simply because no one heeded to Cuba's warnings, except for a few. However, instead of becoming a ghost town, the strong people of Galveston rebuilt it to make it stronger, and more effective against hurricanes. A 17- foot and 10 mile wide sea wall was built. Sadly, some people packed their bags and said goodbye to Galveston, which is evident because today you can see old houses there. I was born in Galveston and lived there for half of my life. It's truly a beautiful city, where there is a Schlitterbahn, Mardi Gras celebrations, a picturesque beach, and a nice charter school there. Anyway, this project was intended to show the determination of people of Galveston to restore this beautiful city.
