It was dropped by a NB-52 mothership and had two stages: a rocket booster and a scramjet. These plus the JP-7 fuel it used allowed it to go mach 5. It could fly at about 70,000 feet. The X-51 was used to test for a missile called the High Speed Strike Weapon, a hypersonic ground attack missile.
