The oppression and discrimination of Black people throughout history has plagued this country for centuries and has not yet ended. The Black Lives Matter movement strives to create progress towards a more equal and just society. The recent deaths of Black Americans such as George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others (some of whose killings we may never know about) have newly highlighted the disgusting system of institutional racism in the United States (and in the entire world), as well as the way that the institution of the police was built on white supremacy. Protests that have broken out across the country to demand justice for these innocent victims have been met with the police brutality that they were meant to fight. We must not accept this. The Black Lives Matter movement is not a temporary "trend," but an important and necessary outcry for justice and equality. You can help in several ways, whether that be by protesting and donating or simply by signing petitions and watching videos that donate their ad revenue to the movement (see the Notes and Credits for links to some of these videos). We cannot stay silent. We will not stay silent. Black Lives Matter.
Music: "Glory" by Common and John Legend. Credit is due, of course, to the Black Lives Matter movement. The slogans in the various "slides" may be from Black Lives Matter protests. Here are the various videos that donate ad revenue to the Black Lives Matter movement (specifically, to various organizations that support Black Lives Matter) and that, hence, help you donate without actually spending money. Titles and creators of and links to those videos (in order of length from 1- longest to 6- shortest) (NOTE: it's best if you search the title inside of the YouTube app instead of clicking on the link- I've learned this from YouTube users <3): 1. There are several others, just look them up! :) <3 Thanks to users on YouTube for the information on how to properly view these videos to make sure your view is counted! <3 NOTE: here's a great article recommended by the creator of the 5th video I linked. It's by Barack Obama- it addresses recent events and indicates how to make a difference for the better: https://medium.com//how-to-make-this-moment-the-turning-point-for-real-change-9fa209806067. I received information on the movement from various sources (articles, videos, etc.). The following site (which I used as a source for this project) provides information on why police officers are so rarely charged with murder: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-its-still-so-rare-for-police-officers-to-face-legal-consequences-for-misconduct/. Note: I first heard of qualified immunity on an episode of Patriot Act, a show by Hasan Minhaj (thanks to for helping me remember that's where I first heard of it). <3 For more information on how you can help out, check out the website: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/. The list of Black victims of fatal police brutality (except for Tony McDade, whose killing I learned of from other articles) is from (and in the same order as that on) a site on which you can find information on the various Black people killed by police. Due to the Scratch Guidelines, I find it necessary to advise Scratch's users that there are explanations of how the victims were killed- I still deem it important to link this website as a way one can educate themselves on this issue, as well as to give credit to the website I used to list some of the victims of police brutality in the project: https://interactive.aljazeera.com/aje/2020/know-their-names/index.html. Here are a few great organizations that support the Black Lives Matter movement: • The NAACP (a historic organization fighting for civil rights in the United States; website: https://www.naacp.org/); • Campaign Zero (a research-based organization supporting policies to end police violence in the United States; they also recommend various articles you can read to educate yourself on these issues; website: https://www.joincampaignzero.org/). • Several others. <3 // Other credits // I may have seen the color scheme used elsewhere and thought to use it here, as well. <3 The font of the text is from Scratch. I used a Google reference for the Black Power fist in the thumbnail. Credit to YouTube for the reference of the YouTube logo and for the music. Thanks to for pointing out a typo. <3
