It it with a heavy heart that I state these words: Rep. John Lewis passed away today (July 17, 2020). After battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer for 8 months, John Lewis finally "lost the battle". However, there were so many more battles that Rep. Lewis won. He marched and fought for rights for African Americans in the United States during the Civil Rights movement. Later in his life, he ran for a seat in the House of Representatives and got won. He continued to hold that seat and fight for African American rights until his death. John Lewis also wrote the comic series "March", documenting his experiences during the Civil Rights era. The series won the Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in young adult literature, the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award, and the YALSA Award for excellence in young-adult nonfiction. Rep. Lewis himself has won many awards, such as the LBJ Liberty and Justice for All Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Profile in Courage Award. Rest in power, warrior.
