Hi everyone! This is Lesson #2 for Directed Drawing, a class in Doodle Academy! Today we will be focusing on filters/add-ons. Side note that this is not Scratch-friendly; you can get Autodesk Sketchbook, ibisPaintX, Medibang and others for free on mobile, and Firealpaca, Krita and others on PC for free. Space to view the slide; click and drag to zoom. Commentary is below. vv 1. Sketch. I sketch with a fade pen at 9.5 size and 25% opacity. 2. Lower the opacity of the sketch to 25% and draw lineart on a new layer. I use 6.0 for my pen size. (I changed the sketch to a dog) 3. Choose a pallette, moodboard, or image as inspiration. 4. Base colors; pretty self explanatory. Don't fill in the eyes or mouth. 5. Fur colors. I set the layer to alpha lock for this. 6. Remove alpha lock and fill in the other colors. 7. Time for some add-ons! You do not have to do all of these; they're just ideas. CLIPPING PHOTOS (free shape) 1. Select a photo you would like to use. 2. On a layer above your color, draw where you want the photo in white (or grey if you're on a light color). 3. Import your photo on a layer over the white markings. Select clipping for that layer. Sometimes it looks better if you blur out the edge; feel free to experiment! 5. Done! COLORED LINEART 1. Go to your lineart layer and select Alpha Lock. Eyedrop your main color and make it a bit darker. Set your pen to the highest size and draw over the lineart. 2. (OPT) Select the other colors and do the same as above, drawing on the lineart that touches the color you selected. 3. Done! HQ SHADING/LIGHTING 1. Select a color from your drawing and make it a bit darker. (Don't choose yellow, I fix that later on) Choose a rough watercolor or alcohol brush and draw a thick line around the character on a clipping layer. 2. Select a dark blending mode (Multiply, Darken, etc) and turn down the opacity. 3. Create another clipping layer over the previous one and draw a thinner border. 4. Select a dark blending mode (Multiply, Darken, etc) and turn down the opacity. 5. (OPT) Change the color of the shading if you'd like. 6. Use a yellow or orange and draw in the center of specific areas (Face, neck, paw, etc) on a clipping layer above the shading. 7. Select a light blending mode (Add, Lighten, Lighter Color, etc.) and turn down the opacity. 8. (OPT) Duplicate all the clapping layers and put them above the lineart. 9. Done! BLURRED BACKGROUND 1. Create a layer under everything else and fill it with a color of your choice. 2. Choose a sputtering brush on a lighter color than the background and draw in it. 3. Go to filters and select Gaussian Blur. 4. Done! BLENDING MODE EFFECTS 1. Un-hide the color and lineart layers. 2. Decide what you'd like to do. I chose some circles. 3. Choose a light blending mode (Add, Lighten, Lighter Color, etc.) and turn down the opacity. 4. Done! CLIPPING PHOTOS (geometrical shape) 1. Select a photo. 2. Use a tool and draw in your shapes. 3. Import the picture (as many times as you want) and choose your favorite spots to put on the shapes. 4. Done! Finished piece! Homework: Choose a pallette, moodboard, or image and create a character (don't use an existing one) and make an icon of them. Use some (or all) of the techniques to make it look nicer. Save the before and after and put them both in your project.
