Our source for today is, the blue prints of the kursk. An Oscar II class Russian nuclear submarine that sank on the 12 of august 2000. The cause of the sink is due to a hydrogen peroxide leak in one if the torpedoes. (hydrogen peroxide can will combust if it reacts with water) naturally a fire started in the torpedo room wrecking the front of the submersible yet this is a 'modern' submarine and it was most likely designed to take on a few hits. the bulkheads that were still intact did their job well and at this time most of the 118 crew were still alive, yet the kursk was was heading towards the sea floor. When the vessel collided with the floor it sent a shock wave back wrecking and destroying bulkheads as it went back, yet it was stopped by the reinforcements of the reactor room. by now only crew were still alive and were behind the reactor room. the propeller seals not designed to be at the depth it was at, was letting water in, slowly filling up the back of the submarine. the remaining crew decided that it was best to go to compartment 9 where there was a rescue hatch and if they were to be rescued they would be rescued from there. they considered swimming for the surface yet they would be twisted up by the sudden change of pressure and if a ship was not near by, they would certainly die of hypothermia on top of other things. they made the decision to stay in the sunken vessel and hope that they were going to be picked up. what threatened them was not drowning or oxygen but basic needs like food and drinkable water....yet they never needed to as they used canister like devices to replace carbon dioxide with oxygen. unfortunately one of the crew members must have dropped this canister in the water as the chemicals that allowed this would combust upon touching water reducing the remaining crew to ash (about several 8 hours after the sink) some of the crew may have dived under the water to avoid getting burnt to death and those would have suffocated as the fire ate all of the oxygen that remained with speed. Although the commander of the fleet including the kursk was aware of what went wrong, he did not want to alert the higher ups who would ask for international help. this would make Russia look weak as they had just recovered from the effects of the cold war. out dated soviet rescue submarines were sent to try and recover the crew, but to no success. the closest rescuer submarine of modern standard was in a hanger near Sunderland, Britain. after a few days of squabbling among the government the families were rounded up and were told that the US had sunk the kursk and that they had found the vessel and were supplying food and air to the remaining crew. yet the grieving parents and widows saw through these lies. The newly elected Putin did not know that he had to get involved personally and was forced by the people to call on the royal navy for help that sent several Norwegian and and British vessels to the resting place of the kursk. Yet was denied access to be with in a mile of the kursk by the commander of the already failing rescue operation there. After 5 days American and British ships, recovery vessels and divers arrived. divers were finally aloud to be on top of the kursk yet the government was still hesitant to allow America to be involved. the divers opened the first hatch of the escape hatch to see whether it was full of water, and because it was, the compartment 9 had been lost to the sea with all the remaining 23 men in it.
