We had given Dawn some eggs to sit on. Sun's egg actually survived a tornado throwing her coop out from over Dawn's head! Dawn was sitting in the nesting box, and the entire Corny coop was blown about 20 feet, bounced and rolled, coming to a stop upside down! The nesting box however stayed upright, and Dawn remained on her eggs. Dawn's our most reliable broody hen EVER! Sitting on eggs through a tornado! Anyway, back to Sun's story. After the tornado, Dawn sat on the eggs until one hatched. It had a sickness that killed a few of our other chicks, sadly. He fell out of the nesting box, and Dawn left all the other eggs to be with him. We transferred the eggs to the ground, and she sat on them some more, but soon the other chick would stumble to another place, and Dawn would follow. After a bit we knew we couldn't keep moving the eggs, so we stopped. One thing saved Sun's egg. Her egg just happened to be laying in the sunlight. She was hatched by the sun, 3 days after the tornado. We weren't sure whether or not Dawn would consider Sun a rival baby, or her own, so we monitored them carefully. After a minute, Dawn came to investigate, and started pecking her head, so I removed her. Sun considered me her "mother hen" so it was hard to decide what to do next. We kept Sun in a rabbit hutch we have. We knew she would be lonely, but there was nothing we could really do. A couple days later, Dove, who was also sitting on some eggs, hatched a chick as well. Sadly again, this chick also had the problem. We tried putting them together, and Dove seemed fine with the idea, but Sun was too curious and kept pecking the other chick, so back to the rabbit hutch she went. After a few days, Dove's chick died, so we put Sun in there to see what would happen. Dove instantly adopted her, and treated her as her own. Sun pecked Dove's feet and face a lot the first couple days, but eventually they were just like they had been together as long as Sun lived! Dove raised her, and now Sun's nearly fully grown! She recently laid her first egg, and it's green! She has never been attacked. She loves flying and being up high, so sometimes she'll ride on our heads, shoulders, arms or backs. She is probably one of my favorite chickens. Her birthday is April 26th, 2020. Thanks to for the first love Also , because the loves were so close together.
