Russia and Japan had been fighting in Asia for a some time during the Russo-Japanese War. On 8 February 1904, Japan launched a surprise naval attack, sinking Russian ships and allowing them to launch an amphibious landing, threatening Russian forces in Manchuria. The fighting was bitter over the next few months, but the Japanese gradually gained the upper hand, pushing the Russians partly out of Manchuria and laying siege to a Russian fleet in Port Arthur. In an attempt to reverse the situation, Russian Czar Nicholas II ordered the Second Pacific Squadron on a long journey half way around the world to lift the siege and buy time for Russian ground reinforcements to arrive. However, after an arduous journey to Madagascar, they learned that the Russian fleet in Port Arthur had been destroyed and the port captured. Their mission changed to destroying the Japanese fleet. They linked up with two more squadrons and entered the Straits of Tsushima, expecting to encounter the Japanese fleet the next day. However, they were spotted by an enemy auxiliary cruiser, and the Japanese prepared for battle the next day. When the fleets finally engaged, Japan's superior modern ships showed their merit. They also focused their fire on individual ships. The Russians fragmented into small pockets as one by one damaged ships lurched out of line. By the end of the battle, the entire Russian fleet had been incapacitated, with many ships sunk or captured. Only a few heavily damaged vessels escaped to port. Japan went on to dominate the Pacific and win the war. Below are the real figures of the fleets. Japan: 4 Battleships 8 Armored Cruisers 16 Cruisers and Light Cruisers 21 Destroyers 44 Torpedo Boats 10 Auxiliary Vessels 103 Total Russia (represented by the US): 8 Battleships 3 Costal Defense Ships 3 Armored Cruisers 6 Cruisers and Light Cruisers 9 Destroyers 7 Auxiliary Vessels 2 Hospital Ships 38 Total
