Like Lia, my family also lives in the nicer part of the city. I don’t know exactly what my Dad does for work, but I guess it earns a lot of money. Every time I bring it up he gets all quiet and then Mom changes the subject, so I just don’t ask anymore. I kick off my shoes and hang my backpack before undoing my hair, the military tight ponytail that Mom insists on putting up every morning. Dad is still at work and I can hear Mom watching one of her boring beauty TV shows, so I run up the stairs and into the workroom to get started on homework. As I’m taking out my school-issued tablet, I notice a white paper on the other side of the table, filled with big bold words that I can’t read from here. Maybe Mom left some flyer she was making? I reach across the table, something Mom wouldn’t want me doing, and snatch it, my eyes widening when I read the words. NONE OF IT IS REAL. What? What’s not real? I debate just throwing it away but something in my head tells me not to. Maybe Lia or one of the boys stopped here before school to scare me? I try to get through my math, but I find myself messing up all of the equations and thinking about the paper instead. I want to tell someone about it, but not worry them in case it is just some prank. I decide Mom would know if one of my friends came over earlier, or who could have put it there. I go downstairs and to the family room where Mom is on her computer, most likely talking to friends or online shopping. “Mom?” I ask, getting her attention. “Mhm?” She says, not looking up from the screen. “Um, did anyone stop by earlier? I found this note…” I hand her the paper and she clicks through a few links before looking down. When she reads it her brow furrows and her eyes widen, but as soon as I clear my throat to get her out of this trance she shakes her head and puts on a smile. “No, no one did… where did you find this?” “Just upstairs in the workroom. The table,” She’s acting weird so I try to take the paper for another look, but her hand snaps back, and she laughs “Actually I’m just going to keep this, honey, don’t worry,” “Are you su-” “Yes, it’s probably just some prank like you said, or… anyways, you can get back to your homework, ” Another smile. I nod and start back to the stairs, but as soon as I turn the corner, that smile vanishes and she gets a determined look on her face. moosic - rain sounds and coffee by beebadoobee ( animated thumbnail code by )
