Heroine Descriptions: Jeanne Mance (1606 - 1673): Co-founder of the city of Montreal and founder of the Hôtel Dieu, the first hospital in New France. Everyone was treated there and, since there was no electricity, Jeanne made lamps by catching fireflies and putting them in glass jars to light up the rooms at night. Maud Watt (1894 - 1997): Nicknamed the "Hudson Bay Angel", she and her children traveled to Quebec from the Hudson Bay by dog sled to demand and obtain a protected beaver reserve. Hilda Strike (1910 - 1989): She participated in the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and was a medalist in the 100m and 4x100m: 100m in 12.2 seconds! Viola Irene Desmond (1914-1965): Viola Irene Desmond was a Canadian civil rights activist and businesswoman of Black Nova Scotian descent. In 1946 she challenged racial segregation at a cinema in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia by refusing to leave a whites-only area of the Roseland Theatre. Lilly Singh (1988-): Lilly Singh is a Canadian YouTuber, comedian, talk show host, writer, and actress. Hide Hyodo Shimizu (1908-1999): Hide Hyodo Shimizu was a Japanese-Canadian educator and activist.
