Welcome to the first out of hopefully many Zelda theories! This time, I am going to prove that (drum roll please) wolf link from twilight princess is dark link! I’ve been looking all over the internet and it seems that no one has really considered this for a theory, I think maybe I’m the first one?? But enough chit chat, let’s get right to it. First we need to prove a couple of things to come to our conclusion: - dark link is with link through the entirety of twilight princess - dark link is or was a twili - the triforce does NOT repel twilight To prove that dark link is with link the entire time, we look at an Easter egg in the beginning of the game, where you see dark link in the mirror. For those of you who don’t know, the Easter egg involves having to stand in front of a stand up mirror and go into first person view. This will show dark link in the mirror instead of your own reflection. This must be done before the lantern is obtained, so it can be hard to locate the mirror in the dark. It is in the far right corner (Wii) or far left corner.(GameCube/HD) The next piece of evidence we look at is at the cutscene the final spirit rewards you with after filling the last spirit vessel. In this cutscene it displays link along side dark link, both abusing the power of the triforce with use of the three fused shadows. The message being conveyed is that link will constantly be followed by the burden of temptation (displayed by dark link) and has to overcome to save hyrule and the twilight realm. The next thing we need to prove is that dark link is a twili. This is going to be a little harder, but in the end it all adds up. The first piece of evidence we look at is back during the making of twilight princess, 2005/2004 (I think) when four swords was released. In four swords you come across a battle with four shadow link aka dark links that all come out of a big mirror. Since these games were both made in the GameCube era, and because both the games are right next to each other on hyrule historia’s official Zelda timeline, one would have reason to believe this is the mirror of twilight. Next, we take a look at a quote from everybody’s favorite midna, “our realm is often referred to as a place of shadows, but that would make it sound unpleasant.” Since dark link was renamed “shadow link” around the GameCube era, well, do I need to explain any more? Ok so maybe those two are arguable but this one is a lot better I swear. So back to the cutscene I mentioned earlier, where you see dark link abusing the power of the triforce. The twilight realm was created as a prison specifically for being that tried to misuse the triforce. They later became forgotten and slowly adapted to the realm to become the twili tribe. Dark link could have very well been locked up for what he has done or tried to do in the past, later evolving into a twili. The final thing we need to prove is that the tri force does not repel twilight. This one is very simple, since Zelda gave up her piece to save midna, who, last time I checked, is a twili. Zelda and link are the only humans able to withstand the twilight without turning into a spirit, so what makes them special, if not the triforce, enough to withstand the twilight? Well, for Zelda, this one’s easy. *cough* goddess hylia *cough* But what does link have? This is where we start to use all the things we have figured out. Dark link is with link the entire time, but doesn’t show because link is the dominant being in the overworld he was built for. However in the twilight, regular link does turn into a spirit, and dark link is present instead, being dominant in twilight. (what I proved he was built for) now we can get into the nitty gritty stuff like, why a wolf? Well, dark link is a beast, a monster, a burden put on the hero of time. Monsters you fight in the twilight don’t turn into spirits like humans, but slightly shift in form. This is why dark link doesn’t look his usual self.
