Rushkit crept out of the medicine cat den under the cover of darkness, aware of the soft snuffles coming from the warrior’s den. It had been almost a moon since her injury and she was sick of Bluesky’s hovering. Making sure nobody saw her, she ducked behind the outer camp brambles and made herself comfortable. “Hey.” Rushkit turned. Wolfkit slunk under the brambles and sat next to her “You wanted to meet?” “Shhh-hhh! You gotta be quieter, they’ll hear us!” Rushkit hissed. “Whad’ya mean, they’re gonna hear us? What interest do they have in us?” Rushkit looked away. “I’m not exactly supposed to tell anyone about this.” “‘Bout what? You can tell me. I’m your own brother!” “Shhh! It’s about another cat. She-” Rushkit paused. “She died.” Wolfkit’s eyes widened. “Who? Why? When? Why didn’t mother-” Rushkit swept her tail over her brother’s mouth. “You can’t tell, okay? Not mama, not Oakstar, nobody.” Wolfkit sighed. “Alright. I hate keeping secrets, but you’re my sister… ugh, fine. Tell me.” “Well, the cat’s name was Nightfall and apparently she killed a cat. She was… uh, Bluesky’s sister. Wolfkit gasped. “WHOA. Mysterious.” “Yeah. She doesn’t want me to tell anyone, but how does she expect me to hide it from my own brother?” “What happened to Nightfall?” Rushkit stared at her paws. “Wolfkit. I had a Starclan dream.” “WHAT! REALLY??” “SHHH! Yes, and I met Thunderclan’s former leader, Ravenstar.” “THAT’S- oh, uh, that’s awesome!” “She said that Nightfall spoke the truth.” “I have absolutely NO IDEA what that means.” “Me neither. I was wondering if you could maybe help me find out?” “Of course I will! Anything beats hanging out with Snake Face and her brats.” Wolfkit bristled. “Why do you hate Darkkit and Poisonkit so much?” Rushkit sighed. “Well, for starters, their mother is horrible to us and named her kits after really CREEPY things. She also has a scary face, nobody know who her mate is, sh-” “Poisonkit is really sweet! Just because mother named you Wolfkit it doesn’t mean you try to eat cats and growl at everyone!” Wolfkit looked at her. She sighed. “That was a GAME. Not real life.” “Well it certainly doesn’t change the fact that-” “Zip it!” “Y’know, you could be a little more-” “No, mousebrain! I heard someone!” She hissed. Suddenly flashing green eyes peeked under the brambles. “Hello there, little kits.” The cat said. “Fireglow!” Wolfkit bounded out from under the brambles. The russet she-cat grinned. “What’re you little squirrels doing under there at this hour?” She asked. “We were talking.” Wolfkit said, Rushkit glaring at him. “What were you two discussing, then?” “Snails!” Rushkit cut in before Wolfkit could answer. “Wolfkit ate one and now he despises them.” She said. “Well, snails are definitely troublesome.” Fireglow answered. “Now, you two go on back to the nursery and get your rest!” She nudged them away. “Oh, alright.” Rushkit yawned. But as she walked back to the nursery she looked back and noticed something… off. She didn’t know what it was, whether Fireglow’s smile was a little too tight or whether her paws were a little too close together but whatever it was, Rushkit just had to wonder how much the russet warrior had heard.
