He always thought she was ethereal, with her long billowing cloak and felt stars twinkling like a halo on her head. The way she would glide across the tall grass by the lake at night, and tilt her head back to study the bright pinpricks of white splattered on the canvas of black. And, Artemis adored Apollo just as much. His strength, his kindness, his everything. They were the perfect pair, bound together by fate and madly in love. Artemis had been staring at the sun, at the golden rays of light shining through the window. It was a Sunday morning, and she had been sitting at the dinner table, munching an apple. Apollo was said to be exploring the forest down the road alone. “I’ll be gone for about an hour,” he promised, cupping her hand in his. But he was wrong. An hour slipped by. He still wasn’t back. Two hours. Three hours in, and Artemis became frantic. She pulled her signature cloak over herself, then set out. The sky had gotten darker, gloomy trees reaching into the sky. Her boots were smeared with dirt, and she started speeding up, breaking into a jog, then a sprint. Her longing for Apollo became unbearable, an itch in her throat that spread into a rash. She had to find him. He was the love of her life. She needed him. Artemis stopped at the river. Her eyes were wide. Too wide. They were bulging, hand covered over her mouth in utter shock. No. No. No, no, no. He was floating atop the river, facedown. He was dead. Her heart was dead. He was gone. She was too. She was torn into two after his death. One side, light, warm and kind.
