Chuck Close Research Essay The Artist I chose is Chuck Close, and the piece of artwork I chose from him is a self portrait of himself . Chuck Close is known for his Photo-realistic portraits. I think the art portrait shows that it is supposed to help the viewer see or imagine what the canvas is in a creative or unique way. Chuck was born 1940, July 4, in Monroe Washington, USA. He primarily works in painting, as well as photography. He is still alive today and at the age of 80. He was born in the era of World War II and Pearl Harbor. Mostly all his artwork movements are photorealism and contemporary art. For me they almost remind me of Zentangles, bricks, or a jigsaw puzzle rearranged to look like a distorted or pixelated version. His inspiration is known to be Jackson Pollock's abstract paintings. I chose a self-portrait of himself. What stood out was overall his whole canvas, almost looking like a distorted version of a normal one. The title of his art I chose is ‘Chuck Close 21st Century’. He used plain paint and a photo of himself to make a large portrait that is 780 x 1024. In some photos on the internet, he is shown painting large scales of himself or others. I chose this artist because when I was searching through names and art, I saw his, and really thought it was cool and creative. What I like about it is that I can try to guess what it is or made out of. It looks like a jigsaw-puzzle placed in the wrong places. It almost looks like he cut out squares and twisted them. Chuck Close is known for his Photo-realistic portraits. So for me, I think the art portrait shows that it is supposed to help the viewer see or imagine what the canvas is in a creative or unique way. I think this essay was helpful because I think it helps my art vocabulary, but overall it was fun researching looking at somebody else’s art. I’d this essay did connect with what we’ve learned about in class as well as the world. From learning how to interpret art and describe, and who or where the artist is or came from.
