They are related to scorpions and some were a few of the strongest predators and existed for a long time. They slowly died out when armored fish became stronger. They got heavily impacted by the late Devonian extinction event and slowly died out during the Permian/Triassic extinction event ~252 million years ago. Some lived on land but most lived in rivers and in the sea. Basically a simple explanation on what these are.
