Originally when the PS&LN was founded, it was a mere humble short line with high hopes. It purchased three locomotives, an ex-L&N SD40, an ex-SERR/ATSF SD40-2, and an ex-SP GP9. The original livery was created in anticipation of a merge with the Yolo Shortline, who owned a notable portion of the former Sacramento Northern. The livery also was made up of many colors that symbolized the PS&LN's hopes. Yellow was selected to be the primary color as it was considered a color of optimism, white was chose as a color of innocence, and black was selected as a color of power and elegance. The Yolo Shortline was merged into the Sierra Railway in 2003, its excursion equipment was purchased by the PS&LN, who changed to their current livery of burgundy, creme, and yellow.
