Hey guys! My first project was calling attention to racism. However, that's a big subject so I'm breaking it down. The first one I'm covering is racial insensitivity. It's a big word. It means, quite literally, being insensitive to racial nuances. Now, you're probably wondering why Jasmine is on the thumbnail. Alladin is an amazing movie with a killer soundtrack and a cool plot. It's based on a story from the book, 101 Arabian Nights. Guess where it takes place? Arabia. However, it is racially insensitive. Arabian culture is nothing like what's shown in Alladin. In fact, it was more of an Indian culture (which I have absolutely nothing against). In its basis, it's subliminally saying we're all the same, which in and of itself is a lie. When big corporations like Hollywood do these things, it makes it seem like they didn't bother to define our races. A friend of mine, Li (@little-theatre-bean), is Thai. Many people have come up to her and said, 'Konichiwa'. They assume that because she's Asian, this is culturally correct. That's wrong. Most racial insensitivity is stemmed from ignorance. When it happens, don't assume it's a cruel thing, although it sometimes is. To help bring awareness, make sure you notice when something or someone is being racially insensitive. If it's for your race, you can gently correct them. If it's a different race, it's better to not say anything, so you don't confuse people further. Also, ask your friends from different races about their cultures! The more we know, the less we are likely to make mistakes. Love, Thea
