Don’t scroll down until you finish watching the animation All made by me Breaking News! Mass locust swarm on the loose destroying crops. The local ecosystem is being affected in many ways. The animals are going on a roller coaster because of lack and surplus of food. Some of the birds that eat locusts are really happy because their food is very abundant. The other bugs that eat the crops are dying because they lack the amount of food that they need. The higher predators that eat animals and plants may have to change their diet to be more carnivorous due to the crop destruction. Also the other animals that ate the bugs (other bugs that ate the crops and are not locust) may shrink in population due to less food for them. We may see an increase in certain species. Like birds and the birds predators because of surplus food. The energy flow (how energy moves through animals in an ecosystem) has had some big changes. When an animal eats another animal they only get 10% of the energy so the more energy in the bottom the more energy in the top. The energy is moving through animals at a much faster rate and in different ways, the energy flow changes are due to the sudden increase and decrease of animals. The energy in this ecosystem is more abundant while this surge of locust is still occurring. Depending on which animal you are talking about, their eating habits and population may or may not have changed. Though there is a possibility an animal hasn’t changed during these locust swarms, it is a very low possibility. For population and energy flow to get back to normal the locust swarms have to go and the crops have to grow back. This would make the populations and eating habits of animals be steady once again. We don’t know how long this will take. The swarms can be eliminated in certain ways by people and with more people working on this problem the faster things will be back to normal.
