It does not know when, it does not know why, it simply knows that it must consume pieces of soul to survive. When saw a rabbit for the first time, it accidentally took it's entire soul, causing the rabbit to collapse and die. It then vowed not to take any full souls again. Some time later, it befriended humans. When one of the humans went to kill many others, it took the human's soul to save the other humans... but it took too much again. The humans made a legend that when you do evil things, evil will take your soul. Yami got mad at this legend... it is not evil! It hid for a small period of time, then began to wander again.
