The sun heats the water which warms it up and causes it to evaporate. Liquid water has a medium thermal energy, atoms flow/move a little fast, atoms are also close together with no regular pattern with a definite volume. Gas molecules have a high thermal energy and move very fast, gas has an indefinite volume, and the atoms are spread out with no regular pattern.
