This music is played by a Chinese instrument called the Bamboo Flute. The dizi or bamboo flute is one of the most popular instruments in traditional Chinese music. The Chinese flute is played horizontally, much like a western flute, and is commonly carved out of a single piece of bamboo with a cork-lined blow-hole. The body of the flute has six finger-holes at measured distances. The purpose of the Bamboo Flute is It gives the flute a bright sound. Commonly seen flutes in the modern Chinese orchestra are the bangdi (梆笛), qudi (曲笛), xindi (新笛), and dadi (大笛). The bamboo flute played vertically is called the xiao (簫), which is a different category of wind instrument in China. ____________________________________________ HOW TO PLAY THE BAMBOO FLUTE: Bamboo flutes are played horizontally rather than vertically, in a very similar style to the western-flute. Keep your elbows out to your sides rather than pinching them close to your body, and try to not hunch your shoulders. A loose, relaxed form is going to help you produce the best sound. ____________________________________________ ABOUT CHINA MUSIC: China has been the home of a colorful culture of folk music. Largely based on the pentatonic scale, Chinese folk music is different from western traditional music, paying more attention to the form expression as well. The texture of Chinese music is often monophonic, where only one instrument is playing, or heterophonic. A heterophonic texture is one where a core melody is simultaneously played with decorated versions of the same melody. Timbre is very important in Chinese music. ____________________________________________ Notes: Hope u guys enjoyed this little description about Chinese music and The Bamboo Flute.
