(edit, september 6 2021: bro why am i just now noticing that this has so many views it’s so cringe-) quick disclaimer: i’m not a professional, nor is this tutorial professional in any way. i’m just a kid who enjoys drawing and who people apparently enjoy the art of. i'm still learning too,,, i only made this tutorial because recently i had one person ask for tips and i’ve gotten multiple compliments on my art, so i felt an urge to make this and show my process. you don’t have to use this process!! in fact, i encourage you not to XD this is just to show how i do it (note: this process is specifically aimed for those who use programs other than scratch to draw. i have a very different process on the VERY RARE occasion i draw in vector or bitmap, which i can and may explain in future if someone wants it) steps: 1. i usually start out with a circle. it sounds stupid, but it’ll eventually be the base for the entire drawing 2. i turned down the opacity of the circle and began the chin. i draw a curved line going down and off the face and then connect it to the sides of the circle with 2 lines, forming a chin and starting the head 3. i begin the neck and rest of the body. since who i’m going to be drawing will be partially turned to the side, i make it look like they’re partially turned. the rest is self explanatory 4. i base out the chest using an oval. “wyyn, your style is so complicated because you use sHAPES THAT WON’T ACTUALLY BE IN THE LINEART IN THE END!!!!1!!1!!” XD yes i know. but it’s actually not that hard once you get used to using shapes like that 5. i map out everything down to the waist, resize the oval (because the character i’m drawing has a big chest, i guess you could say-), and move the torso down 6. l e g s XD it’s pretty simple. i just draw legs. can’t really explain it lol 7. time to go back and do the arms. on a new layer with about 55% opacity, i map out the basic shapes i’ll be using for the arms. this means mapping out the shoulders and curve of the arms and making ovals to map out some other shapes 8. a clearer drawing of exactly what i want the arms to look like 9. the eyes stage. i draw out my eye, pupil and mouth on a new layer 10. i duplicate the face layer, flip it, move it, erase the pupil and mouth, and redraw a pupil on the right side for a pupil facing the way the character’s looking 11. now that the base body sketch is done, i draw on the details for the specific character i’m drawing!! i’m using my meguca character celeste for this, so i replaced one of the eyes with her soul gem as well XD (WHOOPS guess one step was all for nothing XD) 12. lineart!! this is a pretty simple step that doesn’t need much explaining XD i just draw out a cleaner version of my sketch, also fixing what needs to be fixed 13. color!! everyone does color differently, so i won’t go into much trouble explaining this 14. i do lighting on the hair to start my shading. i put the layer on overlay blend mode and set it to 45% opacity 15. basic shading. did the night effect aGAIN (just like my last tutorial) and i’m not gonna go through too much trouble explaining it. if you’d like to know more about it, i’d be happy to explain <33 16. lightened up the darkness and added some shadows. darkness now at 48% and shadows at 35% 17. added a really basic night bg 18. went back and added some eye shading because i forgot that XD and with that, the piece is finished!! personally, i’m not as proud of this piece as i am with some but that’s 100% okay! not every piece of yours will be perfect and that’s fine ^^ it’s normal to have art you’re not as proud of as some other tips: - don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone like i was! (and still partially am XD) experiment with new poses and expressions freely!! - practice practice pRACTICE XD the most basic and important advice i could give is to practice regularly (but make sure not to stress yourself to draw too much ;)) - DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT COMPARE YOUR ART TO OTHERS’ OR SAY “i wish i was as good as you” it’s fine to compliment others or ask for advice, but don’t go comparing your own art to anyone else’s or your self esteem about your own art will start to plummet,,, instead, try looking at things you like in your own art and admire those ^^ - don’t be afraid to ask for critiques!! i try to ask for them regularly and try to take the advice at least a little bit ^^ but you don’t have to take all advice!! some advice won’t be what you’re looking for or be very helpful and that’s fine!! just don’t use it ;) only improve where you want to improve - just a life tip, but try not to cause a scene every time someone doesn’t accept you for something. just walk away OR politely ask for tips for next time ;)
