Happy Lunar New Year('s Eve) everyone! To thank my brilliant friends (@FanGirl613, @Telescope_lume, and @kitcat4ever) who helped me this year I made an extremely small gift dump for some of my closest friends! (there are quite a few friends I've missed, but I'll attempt to send gifts to everyone else off-site). I'm sorry if the art doesn't look good/ is slightly pixelated, even though *all* the art is in vector, I converted some to bitmap to help with the art a little and recolor some things. Unfortunately since I had to complete this soon on a weekday I couldn't get my iPad and make the gifts on procreate since my iPad is always confiscated during weekdays. There are many different versions of how the traditions of Chinese New Year came to be, but I'll tell you one of them: According to Chinese legend, there once lived a ferocious monster called Nian. Once every year at the end of Lunar New Year, Nian would travel to the Chinese villages and destroy everything, eating as much people, children, and livestock it could find. To hide from this terrible monster, people would retreat to the mountains every New Year's Eve. One year, as they were preparing to leave, a strange old man came to the village. He was greeted by an elderly woman who told him about Nian, and urged him to come with the villagers to the safety of the mountains. The old man refused to go, and instead told the woman that if she let him spend the night in her home, he would get rid of Nian for good. At midnight Nian arrived to find the village deserted, apart from the old woman's house. It was decorated with red papers and illuminated by candles inside. Annoyed, the monster swooped towards the house only to be stopped in its tracks by a deafening cracking sound coming from the courtyard. The front door flew open, and the old man - wearing a red robe - came out. This strange spectacle terrified Nian, and the monster fled through the night, back to its home. The next day, the villagers were astonished to find that their village had not been destroyed. Remembering the old man's promise, the old woman raced home to see if he was unharmed, and to find out how he had stopped Nian from wreaking havoc on the village. News quickly spread, and the villagers came to realize that Nian was scared of loud noises, bright lights, and the color red. After that, people would celebrate their triumph over Nian by decorating their homes in red, lighting candles and setting off firecrackers. Whole towns would be illuminated, and instead of fleeing, people would stay up all night to welcome in the new Lunar year. Many of these traditions have lasted to this day, and New Year's Day in China is also known as Guo Nian, which means "surviving Nian's attack". Happy Chinese New Year!
