Click to zoom in Arrows or space to see the "drawing process" (it's just the sketch and flat colors haha) Super cool contest idea! I had lots of fun with this and learned a lot about different yokai ^^ ~INFO~ This is the yokai 古椿の霊 or furutsubaki no rei which means "old tsubaki (camellia) spirit." "When a tsubaki tree reaches an old age, its spirit gains the ability to separate itself from its host tree, along with other strange and mysterious powers." The tsubaki tree is an evergreen tree that loses its flowers by dropping them all at once. As a result, it has long been associated with death and strangeness in Japan. ~STORY~ There was a story from the Yamagata prefecture that inspired me, where two merchants are walking along a road. They see a beautiful woman, who turns one merchant into a bee by breathing on him. The woman disappears into the tsubaki tree, and the bee follows her and lands on a flower. However, the flower's fragrance turns to poison, and the bee and flower fall to the ground dead. I had originally planned on doing 毛倡妓/keijourou or お菊/okiku, but I was worried about their stories being too inappropriate or spooky for Scratch haha. But I'm glad I chose 古椿の霊! She was fun to draw, even if I struggled with her clothing a lot (and the bee ;w;) Again, I had lots of fun with this contest! :)
