☾☽ Spread Your Wings ☾☽ ☾☽ Chapter 6 ☾☽ ☾☽ Almost Flight ☾☽ ☾☽ "Flight? What's Flight?" I asked my friends. Eerie streched her wings out to the side, and then backwards, pressing them together. "Flight is the name of the Avian kingdom. It won't take that long to get there." I frowned. "Wait, we're going there? Now?" Bebosta nodded. "Yep! We just need to get the other Avians. We were only here to get you, acually. I don't know why your Mom didn't just raise you in Flight, like us. We think it's because of your Dad, like, he was a Stray or something. Anyways, your Mom was a close friend of Angelo when she lived in Flight. She asked Angelo to bring you to Flight when you were old enough. So she came with us!" Alton grinned. "Yep! I don't know why she needed so many of us. There's Serenity, Iris, Beb, me, Estel, Nica, Eerie, Saskia. I don't know why Oleander came along. Angelo never asked him to come. He's really creepy." I blinked, trying to process all the names. "Wait... Saskia?" I vaguely remembered her from Miss Zhang's class. "Black hair in a ponytail, grey eyes, wears black, emo, kinda scary?" Iris nodded. "Yep. That's her." She held up her iPad, which had an amazing sketch of a palace: silver and and black marble, gleaming in the sun, navy blue topped spires and gold trimmed windows. All around the palace, Iris had drawn tiny figures in the sky. I could just make out tiny wings on their backs. "Woah. That's amazing." She nodded. "That's the main palace of Flight." She swiped her finger across the screen, showing me another sketch of a building that looked like multipule giant cathedrals, all smashed together, pretty much the same size as the palace. Elegant, arching bridges connected different sections, and there were open windows everywhere. "This is the Aerial School. It's massive, and really old. We all start in a few weeks, you probably will, too. They teach basic Maths there, but mostly so we can keep strack of the food stores when we grow up. Mostly they teach about the History of Flight and the Avians. It's pretty interesting, acually. The main things they teach there, though, is flying, and magic." She showed me another amazing sketch that she'd done. This time it was a massive outside Arena. All around the outside were... perches? That's what they looked like, anyway. The Arena looked like it had been designed for races, but there were what looked like retractable spikes in to ground, so I guessed it was for flying races. "That is amazing." Iris smiled. "Thanks. It's the Racing Arena in Aerial. There are several other, for different things." "So we can just leave? What about my Mom?" Serenity stepped in. "Like we said, she's also an Avian, so she'd be in Flight by the time we get there." I nodded. All this time, and I never knew... "How would we even get there in the first place? I don't think would trains go to Flight, and we can't fly." Estel smirked. "Oh, we'll be flying, alright. We'll just be using a different pair of wings." Before I could ask what she meant, Serenity moved towards the door. "Right, well, we should probably get going. Angelo will probably want to leave soon. " I watched as her silver and gold wings shimmered and folded in, vanishing into her back. Iris, Beb, Alton, Estel and Nica did the same. Serenity opened the door, letting light spill into the dark room. I was about to follow them out the door, but stopped when I felt a hand on my shoulder. “Russet, wait.” I turned to face Eerie. I noticed that on her wings, just where they met her back, two long, thin, black barbs were visibal, reaching just below her knees. On the ends of the barbs were two teardrop shaped feathers, each about as big as my outstreached palm. They were the same color as her wing feathers: brown so dark, it was almost black. “Look, I... I’m sorry.” “For what?” “I don’t know yet.” She wrung her hands. “I just know that something will happen, and I will mess up, just like I did with Aln- uh, everything. Just like I do with everything. Trust me on that. I’m bad luck.” I smiled. “People can’t be bad luck. There are no specific humans- I mean, Avians, who could be bad luck!” I didn’t know if that was true, but Eerie looked so sad at that moment, standing in the shadows. I wanted to make her feel better. She sighed. “You sound like Estel, lots of facts.” Her wings gleamed, and vanished. I thought for a moment. “You know, it’s really hard to say ‘Eerie’ all the time. I’m just gonna call you ‘Rie’.” The faintest, ghost of a smile crept across her lips. “Come on.” ☾☽
