It began when a new star appeared in the night sky, a fiery red in color. Not too much of a big deal. But the star was getting larger and larger by the week, eventually becoming visible even during the day. And then animus magic ceased working. All animi lost their ability to enchant items, and everything that was animus-touched lost their enchantments. Suddenly, the animus-touched items that many tribes relied on were gone. And then the disasters came. Heatwaves ignited massive forest fires, reducing entire jungles to charred rubble. Floods and tidal waves shredded the shorelines as the new star's gravity wreaked havoc with the tides. Fresh water and food became increasingly rare as the extreme heat caused water to evaporate at an astounding rate. Eventually, the new star went away, leaving two ravaged continents in its wake. But that was not the end of the tribe's troubles. For there was yet another horror in store for the tribes; the sun was beginning to shrink, its light slowly but surely becoming colder and darker. Terror set in as the Tribes realized the full magnitude of what the fading sun meant. As the temperature dropped and the eternal blizzards that cover the surface began, famine came, and disease followed. The Queens worked desperately to find new resources and conserve the few resources they had. Religion among the tribes saw a brief surge as hundreds of dragons cried out for mercy, their pleas either ignored or unheard. And then the Sunless Sea was discovered. Miners, digging deeper and deeper in search of scarce resources, broke into a massive, underground sea, one that, thanks to its depth, had been left completely untouched by the ravages of that baleful red sun. Here, water was everywhere and prey was plentiful, assuming you could avoid being eaten by the creatures down here. The tribes, lured by the promise of plentiful food, drinkable water, and the warm and humid climate, came down in droves, settling on various islands and making themselves at home. Within a year, all but a handful of dragons had abandoned the surface, which was now completely devoid of life and covered in icy 24-7 blizzards. All that happened 400 years ago. The tribes adapted to their new life, developing new technology and learning how to live without the sun.
