I was deemed useless when I was about 6 moon-cycles old*. My birthmother was the only one who wanted me alive. So I stayed alive. I would stay in camp, care for the pups, dig dens, stuff like that. When I was 32 moon-cycles old, my mother died. The pack threw me out. That's where we are right now, all caught up. Out in the wilderness, alone. Great. I wake up. Or at least, I think I wake up. I'm in a sort of dream, it had to be. I could see. I could see my mother, her translucent body the only source of light around. I follow her, not knowing what to do. She led me to a watering hole, where she started to drink. I bark to get her attention, but she doesn't respond. She walks away, and I follow behind her. She stopped, fading into a shrews den. I wake up, but in the real world. I'm still blind. The morning sun, although new, was hot on my pelt and my throat was dry. I follow the scents I had tracked in my dream along the way to the watering hole, and sure enough there it is. I take a long, thoughtful drink. Maybe those shrews are there. Maybe... it was real? Again following the same scents I smelled during following my mother, I almost pass the small hole, stepping into it with my paw. I wiggle it around, trying to find the shrews. It was a den with a mother in it, because of all the tiny babies in there. I pull them out, their tiny bodies easily fitting on my claws. The mother tries to run away, but my paw was still blocking the exit. In a few blind bats of my paw, she stopped moving. It was the first time I had hunted for myself. I lay down underneath a nearby Marula tree, grateful for the quiet hum of locusts and the chirping of morning birds. This wasn't by any means going to get my through the day, but at least I would be less hungry during tall-sun*. Without knowing it, I had drifted off into sleep a second time underneath that tree. Another dream. I can still see. This time I'm at the watering hole, where there's a wounded antelope. In the sky, now almost tall-sun, vultures are circling it. If I don't act quick, it will soon pass away and the vultures will get it. Taking note of the scent paths, I wake up, getting up and following my own pawprints and scent trail. I come to the watering hole, where the antelope is crying out for help from it's herd, which has already left. It reminds me of my herd, but I try not to think of it that much. I sit in the shadows for a while, waiting for the antelope to stop crying out and give in. They do, and I rush in to drag it away from the vultures. One swoops in, getting to the antelope before me. It try biting and clawing at it, but it just goes back into the air and perches back down on the antelope. Or, at least I think that's what it's doing. Suddenly the bird flies off in a hurry. I hear a call, a fellow hyena. The call sounds familiar, but I couldn't recognize it until why I realized the call was there in the first place that I realized who made it. It was my mothers call, warning my about an incoming cheetah. I can hear the disturbance in the grass, it wasn't very smart because it was upwind from me. Probably just a few dozen moon-cycles old. I consider running, but it was a cheetah and it would obviously outrun me. I crouch down, backing away from the antelope. It was coming closer, I could hear the louder steps in the mud and the heavy, growing breath of the cheetah. It pounced, and I try to fight back, but my knowledge of play-fighting with my siblings didn't really help me. The rest of it was blurry, I can't remember what it did to me. All I know is where I am, well actually I don't know where I am, and the silence that drenches this place. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA like an hours worth of words. Want to find out what happens? Well you'll find out... in about 5,00,000 years.
