If you are going to adopt an animal, keep this in mind: There are animals that have been neglected and abused that will never find a home because they're "broken" or "not cute enough." People will often go to a pet store or breeder instead of a shelter. That means animals could likely sit in a cage for the rest of their lives because people want baby animals instead. It is actually better to get animals when they're adults, because you can never know what a puppy or kitten will be like when they get older. A kitten can be the devil when they grow up. Adult cats will stay the way they are. Adult disabled animals are the least likely to be adopted, and will be put down if they aren't adopted. Adopting from a shelter saves two lives: The pet you adopted, and the future occupant of the space. Too long; didn't read: Adopting adult and/or disabled pets from a shelter saves other animal's lives. Dedicated to Max and Bean.
