Some if not most police are here to help and protect people. "We're not anti-police, we're just anti-police brutality" (Sharpton). Credits: Google for the pictures @NerdyKitty2539 for the song. August 30th, 2019. These are just a little peice of the thousands of lives taken by police officers. Police are sworn to protect and keep the community safe, and yet they keep killing the people of their community, because of the color of their skin. Police’s actions get pushed off like it's nothing, but they took the life of a human. They not only killed them but they killed the family's hope, and love. While consequences for police brutality are not tough enough, the police need to be held accountable for their actions because they are not currently addressed with those actions, and the amount of people who are killed by police, gives the police no reason to have an excuse for killing someone. Killing people, is and, should not, be a normal for the people who protect. Since 2020, over 1,000 people have been killed by police, and 98% of the cops are not held accountable for it. Every 351 cops that killed someone, only 1 officer is convicted, 3 officers charged and 347 officers not charged. The graph below displays that there are only 18 days in 2020 where police did not take a life. Now just imagine that, only 18 days of 365 where police did not take a life. And they are still getting let off because they are cops. Let me make this clear, Police officers do not. Do Not. Have the right to kill someone and not be charged. This should not be accepted. Imagine it is your brother or sister or mom, dad, son, daughter. And they were taken from you. Your family gets no justice, and your saying that's okay? Additionally when a human kills someone they are sentenced to their whole life in jail, or death sentence. This is completely opposite of what happens when police kill someone. The US murder rate is lower than some police departments, and the Police are not getting charged for it. That is not okay in any way. If the rate of which black people are being killed more than white people is not shown enough, then I don't know what is. Much more black people get killed by police than white people. While yes, there is racism in our world, that does not mean that when it is shown time and time again, that we should ignore it. As a mother once said, “As I got older and became a parent, I had a new fear: It was my turn to prepare my daughters for how to handle themselves when they came into contact with the police. How they should act, what they should say and do. And so, when we saw police yelling at someone or handling a situation badly, I had those conversations with Breonna. And still, it wasn't enough.” (Kerandi) This mother lost her child to police, and she experienced police hands on. Having to teach your child to act around someone who is supposed to protect them, is not an easy talk, nor should it be one you have to have. Not being able to be with your loved one all the time, wondering, are they okay, are they with the police, should not be a thought that lingers in your mind. While I understand that some police officers shoot and kill for self defense, not all killings are self defense. “...I cant breath…” Those are the words of George Floyd. 9 Minutes, the cops kneeled on his neck. He died the day after. Due to those cops actions a man lost his life. What did the police get? Nothing. Absolutely Nothing. They did not hesitate to ignore the man desperately saying that he can't breathe. Their actions had zero consequences, but what else can we expect in our world? Police get away with actions of, well, murder... ↓
While yes, sometimes it is pure self defense, but most of the time the police are not being shot at, or attacked. Police make mistakes, and yes, in that split second you are scared for your life so you shoot. But what about all the other times? Let me make this clear. If you kill someone, it does not matter how, why, where, or when, Consequences should be there. Police are given the higher stance on things, they get to carry guns and tasers, but when they take a life, there needs to be some consequence. Also, look at Alisha McLain. A mother lost her son, due to police. Her son was doing nothing. He was walking home from a store. The police stopped him, Put him on the ground, and gave him ketamine. Ketamine, if you're wondering, can be deadly especially to kids. This boy, This son, he died. Police once again, no consequence. They had absolutely no reason to stop Alisha, and their actions cost a life. This is absolutely, in no way okay. Police should be held to the same standard as a citizen in this world. When you kill someone you go to jail. Wrapping around again, in pure self defense, there will be some avoiding of jail, but there should still be consequences. Think about that. “...A certificate on paper Isn't gonna solve it all, but it's a good place to start...”(Macklemore) Racism is taught, not something you're born with. Everyone has the opportunity to do something incredible. Just choose to do that one incredible thing for good. This world, this lifestyle is undeniably unhealthy. The way we deal with murder from police and citizins is too far from what should be happening. Going into the future, stand up for what's right, make equality something we can say we have in america. -----Quotes----- “I understand we all have our differences. But while learning about history I've read about white people coming together, Jews coming together, Spanish coming together, different cultures and religions understanding and coming together despite their differences. Slavery was never something that shocked me. What shocks me is how black people have not yet overcome the odds and we're such strong smart people. Why we can't just stand together?” - Burkett “If someone puts their hands on you make sure they never put their hands on anybody else again.” - Malcom “Most middle-class whites have no idea what it feels like to be subjected to police who are routinely suspicious, rude, belligerent, and brutal." - Spock “You may have heard the talk of diversity, sensitivity training, and body cameras. These are all fine and applicable, but they understate the task and allow the citizens of this country to pretend that there is real distance between their own attitudes and those of the ones appointed to protect them. The truth is that the police reflect America in all of its will and fear, and whatever we might make of this country's criminal justice policy, it cannot be said that it was imposed by a repressive minority.” - Coates “A racist cop pulls over a black driver for little reason other than the fact that the driver is black and a recent robbery was committed by a couple of young black guys in a white community. The cop quickly realizes the driver is not one of the robbery suspects. He sees a man with a wife and two small children. They are not a couple of young punks. Still, he persists. Why? He asks to see the driver’s license and registration. While locating the appropriate documents, the black driver respectfully volunteers that he is legally carrying a handgun. The cop panics—is it the image of a black man with a gun? He barks out conflicting orders and then shoots the man to death, in front of his family. Why? “Is it because the cop is an insensitive racist? Maybe he wasn’t trained or taught any better? Perhaps he lived a completely different life in a completely different world than that of the black man. In this cop’s world, were all black men potential criminals, people to be watched, people to be feared?” - Bello #alm #blm #lgbtq #ICan'tBreathe #mlk #unity #friendship #family #police #brutality #GeorgeFloyd #Floyd #EndItAll #livesmatter
