Anne breaks a slate over his head and refuses to speak to him until much later. At that time, they are huge rivals for the top spots in all of their classes. Eventually Anne forgives Gilbert and they become very good friends. After years of friendship, and what could almost be considered dating, Gilbert proposes to her, but she refuses, believing her feelings for him were nothing more than a bond between friends.
