Thanks to all 150+ of you who viewed my project! And now, an essay to coconut crabs! Coconut Crabs (And why coconuts were so named) Why hello there. I assume you are reading this because you are interested in coconut crabs (and why coconuts were so named, perhaps, which is an amazing thing to learn about). If you are only here to read about coconut’s reason for being named so, skip to the heading marked: Why was a coconut so named? I do not wish to keep this boring introduction going any longer, as the introduction is never the main part of a paper (except perhaps in my papers). I will now commence my quintessentially written report. Coconut Crab Bodies Coconut crabs, which are the largest land-dwelling crustaceans on Earth, which is no small deal. Weighing nine pounds and growing up to three feet wide. They live for up to 60 years, but will sadly drown if left underwater for over an hour, but I can’t hold my breath underwater for a minute, so that is still very impressive. Coconut crabs live alone, usually under the roots of trees, where I would not want to live. They walk on ten many-jointed legs, the front two holding claws that have the biting force of a lion I wouldn’t want to get pinched by that! These claws were genetically developed over time as a defense mechanism, and these huge crabs have been seen going into a room snapping its claws as a my territory sign. The crab is a total of three feet wide, and nine pounds in weight. I say, and I think you will agree, coconut crabs are armed and dangerous. I cannot believe you are actually reading this! Coconuts were named coconuts for a reason, and I will dissect the name to find that reason. Coconut is a combination of cocoa and nut. Cocoa is another word for chocolate. So does coconut mean chocolate nut? No. coconuts are not nuts, they are fruits. So, nut must mean that they are nut-like in taste. Coconuts do not taste like cocoa. That forms a contradiction, they are named cocoa for no apparent reason, and nuts because they taste of nuts. But there could be a solution to this mystery…. They are both! They taste of nuts and can be cocoa named for other reasons. Those reasons are the color of the shell, and how the shell is flaky, like chocolate. So that is why coconuts were so named. Hurray!
