Press space to look at all the different species. Arrow keys to look at the variations. You can have up to 3 Shards, Phantoms, or Flares as companions. You must ask permission for Wisps. Also, if you have a Flare, you can't have a Phantom, a Wisp, or a Shard without our permission and the same is true with the others. The number in the corner determines max points for that race. It's usually 39, with the one exception being Otameren. Keep in mind that while things like assault rifles, time manipulation devices, and other modern and futuristic tech does exist, it is well beyond anyone's ability to replicate, as is any technology more advanced then that found during the 100-year war in japan. Also, humans don't exist. You can control your character and what they do, but the Managers control basically everything else.
The leader of the mechanical creatures which inhabit the Clockworks, he takes a very dim view of Abyssians, who have, to quote him directly, "An unfortunate habit of barging into our homes, violently disassembling friends and family, and then running off with all our stuff." At a cursory glance, he resembles a flesh and blood Rotoran, but this illusion is maintained by a synthetic 'shell' made of plastic and rubber that is falling apart at the seams; there are several holes in it that reveal the clockwork beneath. He is a very efficient combatant but isn't really inclined to fight. When you run into him, all he'll really do to you is strip you of any clockwork tech you happen to be carrying and kick you out of the templeworks. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of anything else you run into in the templeworks.
