He was looking expectantly at the back door, his patient, light honeydew-green eyes shining silver in the moonlight. He had a white diamond-like shaped mark on his chest. The cat gazed up at the bright moon, shining vividly in the sparkling night sky, /Already past midnight/, he thought, /She has to be coming soon/. The backyard had a wide area of cobblestone, stretched out all the way from one side of the backyard to the other. There was a spot in the cobblestone near the edge to the left that had a hole filled with charred wood. Sometimes he saw that humans would put fire and burn the wood. This place is called “The Pit of Ashes”. The humans would sit around the blazing pit once in a while. There was a gray table on the cobblestone near the edge to the right. It wasn’t a wooden table, it was made of something else. It was cold and hard. There were chairs around it and an umbrella going through the center of the table. There was a porch around the middle of the house that was made of white wood. It led up to the door that was made of transparent glass and can slide open. It had a second layer that can slide open too, but made of thin, scratch up net. At night a cat would come out of that exact door, a cat who he loved. Bang! The cat jerked awake, and he realized he had fallen asleep. He turned right on the spot and darted into a bush, sliding on damp grass. The thin, needle-like branches grabbed at his fur, pulling him back. But he managed to get through. He peeked through the sharp branches and leaves, glaring at an unfamiliar white cat, stepping down the stairs of the porch. The white cat sighed, closing her eyes in the gentle night breeze. /What?/ the black cat growled under his breath, /Who is that?/ A couple moments after the door closed, the black cat leaped out of the bush, and hissed from afar, “Who are you?” He lashed his tail, smacking it down forcefully on the grass. The white cat, surprised, jumped back and accidently kicked her leg on the first stair to the porch, “Ow!” she yowled. She fell over and stared at the black cat with crystal eyes full of fear. The black cat hesitated, he didn’t mean to hurt her, just scare her, “What are you doing? And where is Kayla?” He began approaching. “Don’t touch me!” the young white cat jumped up with a dramatic hiss, even though he was pretty far away, “Don’t you dare!” “Who are you, and where is Kayla?” He repeated more impatiently, halting. “That old rat lives in there!” she pointed her nose towards the house she came from, and added, “And that is my house now.” The black cat tried not to let his rage take control. /How dare she just call Kayla an old rat? That weird cat is probably more of a rat than Kayla is!/ “So what’s your name? And then I’ll tell you my name.” He walked towards the cat again, and then he felt awkward for asking such a question at this moment. He sat down on the cobblestone area near the white cat, getting a good look at her face. The white cat glared suspiciously at the black cat, then she finally mewed, “My name is Zola. And what do you care about Kayla anyways?” As the black cat stared at Zola for longer, he realized that she was a dirty white with gray patches around herself, and had a black tail with thick dark rings. Zola had a gray face with sharp dark stripes on it, and icy blue eyes that stared back at him. He blinked. “My name is Skull, and I live at a barn.” He paused, then continued, “Me and Kay-” “How dare you trick me!” Zola yowled, her voice growing high pitched, “You tricked me! Evil barn cat! You’re the evil barn cat!” Zola’s tail turned into a dark storm cloud, and she lashed it down like lightning. The stone ground screeched as she clawed at it. In a sudden move, she lifted her paw, and swung at Skull’s face. Skull jumped back with a hiss, baring his teeth, “Evil cat?” He spat, “I’ll show you evil cat!” He pounced at Zola, landing solidly on her. Zola jerked to the side, flipping them both over. Rolling on the hard, bitter ground, he knew he shouldn’t have done that. It felt like hours had passed before Zola finally pinned Skull down, one of her claws uncomfortably stabbing his leg. (continued on Notes and Credits)
(continued) “I got you!” Zola spat at Skull’s face. Skull kicked his back legs at Zola, but Zola just dug her curved claws in harder. He was trapped. Skull looked around wildly, and saw that they were next to The Pit Of Ashes. He thought of a plan, push her over, she’ll roll into the hole, and he’ll escape. Skull gathered all his strength and shoved Zola off of him. She tumbled off of him with a surprised shriek. He opened his eyes, hoping that he had enough time to escape, but Zola didn’t give up, she was already getting out of the pit, “Skull, if I beat you, I will tell Kayla everything!” She smiled vaguely, “And I know you wouldn’t want that.” _____________________________________________ Notes _____________________________________________ -This is 1 and a half pages from this 6 and a half page story -When 2 / are put around text, /like this/, they are thoughts.
