The snow had begun to melt as Leafbare faded into Newleaf. Sun shone down on the Riverclan camp causing the ice along the surface of the river to melt. Crystalkit peered out of the nursery nervously. She hoped Flintstem would come back soon from the patrol, he always protected her from the other kits teasing. Suddenly her ears perked up as she heard Honeyberry’s voice. “Why aren’t you playing with the other kits little one?” She meowed softly, nudging Crystalkit with a cream colored paw. “They don’t like me.” Crystalkit wined. “Oh, I’m sure that’s not true.” Honeyberry replied with a wave of her tail. Out of all the elders Honeyberry was definitely her favorite. “It’s true, yesterday Cherrykit called me an outsider and the day before that Bumblekit said that I would be an awful swimmer cause I’m not from here.” Honeyberry gave a slight frown. “Did they now? Well how about a story to cheer you up.” Crystalkit’s eyes brightened, “Ooo! Tell me about the battle against Thunderclan!” “Again, haven’t I already told you that story a hundred times.” She teased, tucking the small kit in with her tail. “Pretty please? It’s my favorite.” Crystalkit begged, she longed to hear the tales of the great Riverclan warriors and how they beat Thunderclan in the battle over sunning rocks. “Ok fine, if you insist.” The elder purred. “Once the great sunning rocks belonged to Riverclan, back when it was covered up by the river. Sadly there came a great drought and it dried up all the water in the river, creating sunning rocks. Even though it was part of our territory the Thunderclan cats wanted it for themselves and tried to fight us over the land that was rightfully ours.” Crystalkit’s teal eyes went wide as she listened. The more she heard the more she wanted to become a warrior as soon as possible. She didn’t care that she wasn’t born in Riverclan, she was meant to be a warrior. A dark gray head suddenly poked through the den. “Flintstem!” She purred, running over to the older warrior with joy. “Oops I’m sorry to interrupt Honeyberry.” He apologized. “No worries, Crystalkit has already heard the story a million times anyways.” Flintstem let out a small laugh as he dropped a sparrow at Crystalkit’s paws. “Woah! It’s huge!” She breathed softly, admiring the sparrows long brown feathers which glimmered in the sunlight. “I caught it just for you.” Flintstem purred. “Now eat up and head to bed, it’s getting late.” Crystalkit paused at the thought of going to bed. The apprentice would be waiting. After she ate Crystalkit curled down in her bedding. Although she didn’t want to, she felt sleep overcome her like a rolling wave of blackness. She slipped into the same dream she had been having ever since she was found in the woods by Flintstem. The apprentice was there again with her cold blue eyes watching her. Crystalkit knew that this apprentice in her dream was dangerous yet she felt a longing to go towards her. Then apprentice spoke the same line as she did every night. “Thunder means death Thunder means life, the North is a horrible place to go yet you must go or all is lost.” Then the she cat turned and walked away. Crystalkit awoke with a jump. The moon shone high in the sky, it was still late. Although the apprentice’s words from her dream had scared her, Crystalkit felt an odd longing. She had never felt so alone in her entire life.
