Antonin Dvorak’s twelfth string quartet, nicknamed the American Quartet, was composed while he was visiting the New World. Tunes from songbirds inspired the composer to write lilting melodies in the violins, and the pentatonic Native American tunes he encountered influenced the viola solo the piece begins with.
