This time in 1871, one hundred and fifty years ago, the Paris Commune was brutally crushed by the French bourgeoisie. The Paris Commune is, in fact, long dead. But the ideals behind the Commune—democracy, equality, socialism—live on. In that sense, the Paris Commune is immortal. For the first time in history, the working class overthrew the rule of exploiters and took power for itself. Although the Paris Commune lasted two short months, its impact on the world thereafter was inestimably large. The brave workers of Paris showed the workers of all countries that a better world was possible, if only they took power into their own hands.
