His mother and older sister were able to escape. For the first few years of his life, Ralieo was kept in a tank and raised as a killing machine. However, after all of his training, he was classified as defunct. He wasn't violent and wouldn't participate in training exercises with the other 'taken', or others that were stolen from their home planets by the Legions to be trained as future soldiers. To keep the taken contained on the ship, they would be put unconscious after training and placed in containment tanks, where tubes were attached to the backs of their upper arms, pumping oxygen into their bloodstreams. These tubes often left scars from where they were attached. Each of the taken had an ear tag and a number- Ralieo was #307. His father, however, pledged loyalty to the Mechanica Legions to save his own skin when he was captured. When he was able, though, he broke his oath and freed his son, telling him to take an escape pod and giving him coordinates to return to the safehaven planet Earth where his mother and older sister had gone. Once his transgression was discovered, the Mechanica Legions planted a chip in the stem of his brain, forcing him into loyalty. It's said that this warped and controlled version of his father rose through the Legions' ranks and was now a commander, but that remains a rumor. Upon returning to Earth, Ralieo blocked out the memories of his time on the ship, and was enrolled in a not-so-typical Earth school, specifically for 'extraterrestrials and those interested in space travel'. There, he was often bullied for his appearance and mocked for the scars on his arms. Other students would pull on his tail or ears or beat him up in the halls or out at lunch. This was becoming unbearable, until someone else stepped in. His name was Chase Maxwell, and he and Ralieo became fast friends, protecting each other from those who used to overpower them. When the Star Scouts program became available to them in the 8th grade, they both joined in and were paired with one another. They were given a small ship called the Smokedrift, and began to complete simple training and routine scouting missions to Earth's moon and surrounding asteroids or stars. One day, Ralieo is absent, and while scouting alone, Chase encounters a Mechanica Legions scouting ship. He pursues it, but its technology is far too advanced, and so he returns to the docking port. He promises everyone in the program that he'd seen a craft, but nobody believes him when he says how fast it went- they don't know of any extraterrestrial civilizations with such advanced technology, so it must be impossible. When Ralieo returns the next day, Chase tells him about it, and it unlocks an odd memory from his childhood. A glassy-looking black ship that moves impossibly fast and leaves a glowing green trail. He recognizes it and explains the Mechanica Legions, and why so many more aliens are making the voyage to Earth. Their homes have been destroyed, and they're seeking refuge. Ralieo and Chase sneak out that night and venture far past where the Star Scouts are supposed to go, searching for any trace of the ship. They don't find it, but they do touch down on the surface of Venus. In a fleeting moment, they see a being dash behind a tall rock pillar and decide to investigate. There, they meet an alien who appears to be adorned by gold feathers with four birdlike wings. Her name is Takama Krio, and she is a native of the planet. She says that her people were some of the only ones that were able to fend off the Mechanica Legions when they attempted to invade- granted, their forces were far smaller at the time. After sensing the growing threat, her people constructed a weapon that can slash through the hull of a spaceship, the titanium exoskeleton of a Mechanica soldier, or almost any other material. Takama says that she's been looking for someone to wield this weapon, and states that only a true, pure-hearted warrior should have it. She asks Ralieo and Chase a few questions, and Ralieo describes a plan to gather the forces of several planets to fight the Legions and bring them down for good when asked what he would do to push back against the Mechanica Legions. She grants him the weapon and promises the elder aliens of Venus that he's the right choice. They trust her judgement. She asks Ralieo and Chase if they'll come with her to help her follow a few leads and take down secret Mechanica bases, and they agree. First stop: the black market on planet Vilnera.
