<Prologue> The Frankish kingdom had a poorer economic foundation than the Eastern Roman Empire or Islamic powers. The kingdom was based on sustained and unremitting military success, and maintained its armies by acquiring loot through sustained war victories. That is why Carlos went to war every year during his 47-year reign. His expedition continued as far as the Hungarian steppes. And with the spoils, the country was built and the army was strengthened. For him, war was both foreign and domestic.
