His father was a soldier for the army of the Earth Kingdom, and therefore an earthbender. That made Tokai a lavabender. He had a sheltered upbringing, but his aggressive nature meant that he was often targeted by soldiers attempting to draft him into the army when he came of age. He refused to pick a side, and when he came of age to join the Earth Kingdom's army, he chose to flee instead, finding refuge in the neutral ground of Kyoshi Island. There, he kept a low profile and trained often, although since his lavabending was hard to control, he's still an amateur. When Prince Zuko arrived on Kyoshi Island in his hunt for the avatar, his soldiers found Tokai to be rather troublesome and took him prisoner, figuring that they could force him to fight for them. Tokai had always acted in his own best interests, and decided that the best way to not get burnt to a crisp was to just do as the soldiers asked. He still gave them a fair share of trouble, shouting insults and fighting back when possible. Most of the time, when they wanted him to do something, he'd simply refuse to do it unless they physically forced them. He dedicated his free time to training. Over time, unfortunately, he found himself growing rather fond of the prince and his uncle. However, when he convinced them to let him go promising that he'd stay by their side, he actually fled, setting his sights on his home- Ba Sing Se. He made it all the way there, and by the time that he had, Zuko and Iroh had already split away from the Fire Nation and their crew and fled there as well. Tokai's pet crococat, Dusty, had known Zuko previously from Tokai's time on his ship, and the pet had returned to Ba Sing Se along with her owner. However, she managed to track down Zuko in the city and bring him to Tokai's home, where the two reunited. When Zuko was invited back to the Fire Nation, Tokai came along, although reluctantly. He eventually felt like he couldn't just sit idly by and live among the Fire Nation royals, so he fled late one night and vanished. He only told Zuko that he was leaving, he didn't say where he was going to. Only "far away". Tokai actually left to find and assist the Avatar, and when Zuko did the same thing, the two met up once again, this time sticking together.
