Between shows and travelling, my team has been frantically preparing plans for my gala. Right now, we’re getting ready for our last flight, which will take off for New York from our current location, London, in about an hour. As we stride through the airport, my crew bustles around me, chattering anxiously about the gala plans. I love them to death, but the endless cacophony of questions has become a little irritating. “Mettaton!” Kim asks, jumping up beside me, scrawling notes down on a clipboard. I notice that her sweaty brow is creased in frustration. “We still need to decide on a color scheme for the decorations to tell the team back at Ebott City! What did you come up with?” “I told you, Kim. Light pink and cream, with fuschia accents. Are you all right? You seem stressed.” “I’m fine, I’m fine! Just, planning such an enormous party so last-minute is incredibly ambitious,” she huffs. “I mean, we’ll only have a couple days after arriving home to make sure everything has been set up properly. What if the team messes it up and we’re not there to oversee it?” Before I can respond, someone else rushes up, tapping my shoulder. “Mettaton, Dr. Alphys has sent you a series of messages. She’s scheduled your last appointment for your nervous system installation for the day after you arrive back home.” I stop right in my tracks, startled. “Oooh! Fabulous!” I gasp. “That will be marvelous. But that also means I’ll have to leave most of the party prep to all of you. Do you think you can handle it?” Kim opens her mouth, but the other person steps up first, grinning wearily. “Don’t sweat it! We’ll take care of everything.” Kim sighs and continues speed-walking towards our gate. “We also need to settle on entertainment, food, and invitations… Ugh, so much to do! All we’ve done so far is choose the time and venue!” “Hey, hey, we’ll be fine!” I assure her, running up beside her. “We need entertainment, right? Since it’s a dance event, I can ask my cousin Napstablook if they and Shyren can perform music for everyone. I think they would love to. If they ask for a fee I’ll cover it, no worries.” “All right, but what about food?” “The food doesn’t matter to me, honestly. Maybe get catering from a bakery that provides treats in a purplish color scheme…” I snap my fingers as an idea pops into my head. “Muffet’s bakery, in downtown Ebott! We can order from there. How many people will invitations be sent to again?” Kim checks her notes. “82.” “Okay, how about this- write this down. We’ll ask for an order of 200 macarons in a purple-fuschia color scheme, along with about 170 cookies and 170 donuts. We’ll also get a large batch of spider cider- without the spiders, of course- to serve.” She nods, jotting down my instructions on her clipboard. “Got it. And what about the invitations?” “U-um, actually…” Another member of my crew timidly races forward, fidgeting nervously with their hands. “Mettaton, if you’d like, I’ve made a possible design for the invitations. I don’t know what you’d think of it, but if you want to look at it…” “Of course, darling! Let me see it,” I say eagerly. They fumble through a bag slung over their shoulder and hand me a small piece of paper. The design is rather lavish and extravagant, but simple enough so that it isn’t over-the-top. The colors fit perfectly into the scheme I chose. “It’s perfect! We’ll go with- what’s your name?” I ask quickly. “N-Nuna,” they stammer in surprise, and I smile. “We’ll go with Nuna’s design, then. Thank you, Nuna!” They nod hastily and scamper back to join the rest of the crew. I give the invitation to Kim, who examines it with a scrutinizing gaze.
^^^ READ INSTRUCTIONS SECTION FIRST ^^^ “It is a nice design. Okay, then, but we still have a lot we need to get settled, like the dress code, and the budget, and-” “Kim, please. We’ll be just fine,” I say calmly, placing a hand on her tensed shoulder. “You’re an amazing planner, and I’m sure anything you come up with will be perfect. Okay?” She shakily nods. “I guess you’re right. I am pretty great. And anyway, I know that if nothing else, you’ll have an amazing time regardless of how the party turns out. Especially if a certain someone shows up.” She gives me a knowing glance, and I raise an eyebrow in confusion. “What are you- oh.” Realization hits me quickly, and my face immediately flushes. Kim notices and smirks. “So, you gonna ask her out or what?” she whispers, and I back away, startled. “H-hey! That’s- I don’t-” From the look in her eye, I can tell there’s no use lying to her, and I give a defeated sigh. After glancing back to make sure no one else is listening, I lean in and speak in a low voice. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Kim. She… She’s been through a lot, and I think what she really needs right now is a friend. I want to be there for her, and I shouldn’t risk screwing that up by being too forward.” Kim shakes her head in exasperation. “When will you learn, man? You know how you feel about her, don’t you?” I blush again and stare at the floor. “Of course I do.” “And if you bottle that up for too long, it’s not going to lead to anything good. You’ll either get so sick of waiting to tell her that you’ll do something rash, or you’ll somehow convince yourself that she doesn’t love you back and end everything before it even starts.” I blink. “That’s kind of harsh, Kim.” “It’s the truth, and you need to face it.” She gives me a light, friendly punch on the arm and a smile. “What’s the worst that could happen if you say something? She’ll say no? That’s not that bad.” “It’s more complicated than that. I just don’t want to overwhelm her. You know Eliza. She’s so sweet, smart, and passionate… but she’s also sensitive and anxious. She doesn’t believe in herself very much, and she tries not to rely on others. I don’t want to accidentally make things worse for her.” “How would confessing make things worse? By letting her know you care?” “She already knows I care! Just… as a friend!” I protest, and Kim rolls her eyes. Before she says anything, we both notice that we’ve reached the gate, and we need to board our plane. She turns to look at me. “We have to go now. We’ll talk about this later, okay?” I sigh, disappointed. “Okay.” ♡ chapters 45-49 are where everything starts to hit the fan lol Music: "This December" by my love Ricky Montgomery, piano cover by Piano Mix on YouTube All Undertale content and characters belong to Toby Fox.
