Hit the flag for background music :D Previous chapter: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/552648917/ ♡ Shielding my eyes from the bright spring sun, I step out of the front door of the house. Mary is holding my left arm, supporting me in case my balance is thrown off again. “I can’t believe it! This will be your first time going for a real walk for months. Are you excited?” “Yeah, I guess I am- but, Mar, I don’t know about this. I still haven’t fully figured out how to use this prosthetic. What if I trip and get hurt? Maybe I should wait a little longer,” I fret, and she shakes her head. “No, no turning back now. You need to start building up your sense of balance again and regaining your strength! And that starts now. Come on!” She guides me down the stairs and onto the sidewalk, then begins pulling me down the street. “This is a really nice neighborhood… You’re lucky to be staying with someone like Mettaton, you know?” “Of course I know.” I’m too focused on trying not to fall over to really listen to Mary right now. The prosthetic responds well to my thoughts and wishes, but it’s so hard to get used to it. The feeling is so different from that of having a real leg… Mary fans her face. “Boy, it sure is getting hotter out. It’s hard to believe that summer is just around the corner. You need to come visit me on-campus sometime. There’s an AMAZING pool there!” “Are you sure I should be swimming with this prosthetic? I need to ask Dr. Pax if it’s waterproof…” I mutter to myself nervously, and Mary sighs. “Don’t think about that right now. Enjoy yourself, girl! Get used to having two legs again!” “Okay, okay!” I take a deep breath and look up, taking in the scenery of the neighborhood. A few monsters are out and about on the streets as well, chatting with each other, riding bikes, or just enjoying the warm weather. It admittedly feels a little strange to be one of the only humans outside, but as long as I don’t get too much attention, I don’t mind. Behind me, loud footsteps sound, accompanied by an enthusiastic yell. “HEY!! HEY, YOU! BEHIND YOU!!!” Well, so much for not attracting attention. Apprehensively, Mary and I turn around. A short, abstract-looking monster, accompanied by a taller one that resembles an ice-cream cone with a flaming head, rushes up to me. “You- are you Eliza? Like, from that YouTube channel?” I stare at them in shock, unsure of how to respond. “I- uh, w-what??” “You did that duet with Mettaton!” the second monster shrieks. “You’re amazing! Can we get a photo??” “Oh, u-uh, sure?” I nervously shuffle over to them, too shocked to protest, but Mary yanks me away by the wrist. “Actually, I don’t think that’s such a good idea,” she cuts in. Leaning in towards me, she whispers, “What if they share the photo and reveal your location? That would be really bad.” “Oh, good point.” Clearing my throat, I turn back to the two monsters, who look at me eagerly. “I-I- uh, sorry, but I c-can’t take a picture with you. It w-was nice to meet you, though?” The first monster’s shoulders sag in disappointment, but the second one whips out a piece of paper and a pen. “Could I get an autograph, then?” Blinking in surprise, I take the pen. “Oh, err- I guess there’s no harm in that.” I quickly sign the paper, and they hold it to their chest. “Thank you, Eliza! We’re such big fans!!” they gush, and I can’t help but awkwardly smile a little. I have fans? What the fresh heck?? This is completely new.
^^^ READ INSTRUCTIONS SECTION FIRST ^^^ As the two monsters walk away, Mary turns to me with an expression that’s somewhere between smug and impressed. “Well, well, well! Look at you, you famous celebrity, you.” I roll my eyes. “Oh, please. It was just a coincidence. I highly doubt anyone would ever recognize me out in public again. Let’s just keep going.” “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,” Mary warns me as we continue to walk. “Remember, you signed up for this.” “I didn’t sign up for anything. Putting myself out there shouldn’t come at the risk of my privacy and safety,” I huff. “It shouldn’t,” my sister agrees, helping me over an uneven patch of pavement. “But it does. The world sucks a lot of the time, Betsey. Some people are great, but others… well, they don’t see celebrities as people. They view them as figureheads, idols, almost gods. So although they idolize them to an unhealthy extent, they also don’t view their privacy or personal lives as worth respecting.” “It’s ridiculous, isn’t it?” I sigh. “Mettaton told me the story of how he bought this house. At his old home, he was stalked by a small group of obsessive ‘fans’ who later tried to break into his house. He moved here because it’s so high-security. It just makes me so angry that those jerks put him on such a high pedestal that they couldn’t even see him as a person, with his own life and feelings. I hope he never has to deal with anything like that again… and that I won’t, either.” Mary shakes her head. “I wish I could just snap my fingers and make all your problems go away, Betsey, but the world just seems determined to bring you down.” After thinking about this for a moment, I murmur, “Well, I won’t let it.” Mary stares at me, surprised. “I- beg your pardon?” “I won’t let it. I’ve made it this far, haven’t I?” I muster a small smile. “My apartment burned down. I suffered the worst injuries of my life and lost my entire leg. I’ve fought a bunch of different mental issues, most of which I’m still trying to beat. And I’m still here, aren’t I?” My sister continues gaping at me in astonishment as I go on. “I’ve been through so much crap, and yet I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I’ve got new friends. I’m more confident than ever- which isn’t saying much, but stil.” “How… I’ve never heard you this optimistic,” Mary interjects, beaming. “That’s amazing.” I laugh, taking her arm to help keep my balance. “As long as I keep pushing through… As long as I’m determined, I’ll be okay.” ♡ but everything was not okay ♡ NEXT CHAPTER: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/554009722/ #undertale #fanfiction #fanfic #mettaton #eliza #elizaton #marianne ♡ Ok as much as I would like to leave this off so mysteriously I do need to add the credits Music: "Tomorrow" from Annie, piano cover by Paul Hankinson Art and writing by me!
