[Update 10/11/2021: Yay, I'm moving on to the quarter-finals! Let's see what I can compose with school ongoing.] Hello! This is my entry for the Judge Cuts round of Scratch's Got Talent Season 5! I'm so excited that I passed the audition round, and as a result, I'm honored to present this project! I entered in the field of composition/songwriting, something I am continuing to pursue in my free time, and so my Judge Cuts entry is an original song. "Calamitous" is a song that was composed throughout the month of June. Initially it was just a tune, an idea that I really wanted to make something of, and with a ton of procrastination, I was able to DEFINITELY make something of it. Throughout the editing process for the song in late June, it grew to become my all-time favorite original song. This is because I was really able to connect to it, to give it everything I had and to make it something more than anything I had ever done before. I tried many different concepts while editing, and in the end, I learned one important lesson; the best songs have the most passion and the most emotion guiding them. [To see a more detailed description of my process of making this song, go to the original project of "Calamitous": https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/541153909/] Additionally, I have two things to mention about this song/entry. - I purposely mispronounced the word 'Calamitous' to give the song the sound I wanted it to have. Throughout the song, I repeatedly mispronounce 'Calamitous,' and this was completely intended. - I did say I was going to compose something new for each future round while auditioning instead of re-using songs that I'd already shared, but that was before I finished "Calamitous," and once it was done, I simply HAD to enter it in for a round of SGT. I'm too proud of this song :P Also, you can stream "Calamitous" pretty much anywhere now: https://share.amuse.io/n-1Sw8tkQeA9 Finally, I like to discuss the meaning of my songs, because my main purpose in creating original music is to inspire. As the project description of the original "Calamitous" says, the song is 'meant to convey how people who are fine with the world being the way it is are only seeing an illusion. Unfortunately, just hoping and believing that the world is a great place is not enough to make it actually so.' And I certainly haven't changed my mind about the song's meaning. Some of it is still let up to interpretation, but overall, I've always thought of "Calamitous" describing a world in which everything's wrong, things are worse than they ever were, and everyone thinks that nothing is wrong. Or perhaps they think that even if they TRY to make a difference, it won't really change anything, so they don't bother at all. But change is what makes us who we are. Look at how much the world has already changed. None of it happened because we were too afraid to try, because we didn't bother to do it. The world's not perfect, and those who think it is are seeing an illusion. However, we can do our best to make it a better place, even if it's the smallest difference.
