You’re really starting to freak me out.” “It- it’s just cold in here.” “It’s at least 80 degrees, and crammed full of people.” Mary is right about one thing. The sheer number of guests at this ball is making my head spin. I’m literally quivering from head to toe, paralyzed with anxiety. “I just… so… so many people… I can’t dance… W-what if-” Before I can continue, Mary takes my hand and gently guides me through the throngs of people. She glances back at me for a moment. “Yui won’t be arriving for another fifteen minutes, so I have some time to lecture you.” “Oh, God no.” “Yes.” Once we reach a back corner of the ballroom, she spins me around and grasps me by the shoulders, staring me down with determination. “You want to dance, right?” “I- I- u-u-uh-- well-” I blabber, my mind going blank. She shakes my shoulders lightly. “With Mettaton, right?” “IIIIIIIIUUUUHHHHYES!!” I finally blurt out, my face turning bright red. I take a deep breath, closing my eyes. “...Yes, with Mettaton.” “So then ASK! It’ll never happen if you don’t. And if you do, what’s the worst that could happen?” “...I could slip and fall flat on my face in front of dozens of strangers?” Mary blinks. “I was expecting you to say ‘he could reject me,’ but I guess that works too. Well, guess what? NEITHER OF THOSE ARE THAT BAD. You can just dust yourself off and move on.” “Easy for you to say! You haven’t-- you don’t- I- uh-,” I snap defensively, then falter, unsure of what to say. “Look, I just don’t want to come off as needy. I don’t want to rely on him too much. He’s already done so, so much for me.” “SO WHAT?!” Mary yells, and I recoil, my brow beading with sweat when I realize that other people are staring at us now. “Mary--” I whisper hastily, but it’s too late. Now she’s gone off the rails. “That robot has dedicated hours of his life and insane expenses to you, but you know what? YOU NEVER ASKED HIM TO! He CHOSE to do it! And you know why? BECAUSE HE CARES! He WANTS YOU TO BE HAPPY! YOU OWE HIM NOTHING! AND YOU ARE NOT A BURDEN TO HIM, OR TO ANYONE!” By the time she’s finished, Mary is out of breath, her hands on her knees and her face flushed. After taking a moment to recover, she looks up at me fiercely. “You owe him NOTHING,” she repeats, hissing through her teeth. “You are not needy, and you are allowed to want what you want. You are allowed to ask him for things.” I’m still frozen in shock when she smoothes her dress and checks her phone. “Yui just arrived at the front door. I have to go pick them up. Wait right here, I’ll be back.” Before I can say anything, she’s already gone. Well, this sucks. Now I’m completely alone in a crowd full of strangers who just witnessed my sister screaming at me. I love Mary to death, but however smart and confident she is, she sometimes doesn’t think these things through. “Elizabeth? Dear, is that you?” I find myself pulled from my anxiety by a familiar, soothing voice a few feet away. Instinctively I whip around, and sure enough, there she is. “Toriel!” I gasp in relief. “Oh, thank goodness, someone I know. Do you know where Mettaton, Alphys and Undyne are?” She smiles warmly, closing the distance between us and placing a hand on my shoulder. “Sadly I do not. However, I was just getting some cider before joining Sans and Papyrus over by the balconies. Would you like to come with me?” I sigh gratefully. “If you d-don’t mind… Thank you so much. Is Frisk here tonight?” She shakes her head as she takes my hand in her paw, leading me away. “They are at a sleepover with some friends from school. I love them very dearly, but I must admit, it is nice to have a night to myself every now and then.” “I can understand that. I mean, I’m not a parent or anything… but I still need my space occasionally, just some time alone to recharge.” The former Queen winks at me. “Don’t forget to have fun, too. Speaking of which… Sans, I hope you don’t mind that I brought Eliza with me.”
^^^ READ INSTRUCTIONS SECTION FIRST ^^^ I hardly even noticed that we’d reached the two skeletons by the windows. “heya, eliza,” Sans says nonchalantly. For once he’s wearing something other than basketball shorts and a greasy old hoodie… He’s wearing DENIM shorts and a NICE hoodie! “GREETINGS, DEAR ELIZA!” Papyrus exclaims, grabbing both my hands and vigorously shaking them. He has donned a surprisingly stylish red suit with the MTT logo plastered across the entire back. “IT HAS BEEN TOO LONG! WE NEED TO ‘HANG OUT’ MORE!” I laugh nervously. “Yeah, we really do.” “Mind if we join?” Undyne approaches our little group with a huge grin, Alphys leaning on her arm. “We couldn’t find anyone else we know.” Both of them look so adorable and happy together, and I can’t help but smile at the sight of them. “Of course, Undyne and Alphys. I am happy to see you again,” Toriel greets them politely. “Elizabeth had just been looking for Mettaton. Do you know where he is?” I try to stop Toriel from saying anything, but it’s too late. Alphys and Undyne are both already staring at me smugly, with knowing looks on their faces. “Looking for Mettaton, a-are you?” Alphys teases. “Sure, we can help.” I swallow my embarrassment, looking her in the eye. “You can?” She nods. “Sure thing. H-he went outside a little while ago to help load in the food, but he s-should be done by now. He’ll be coming in in a f-few minutes.” Hope and anxiety flare up in my stomach at the same time. “Really?” Undyne leans towards me with a smirk. “Whhyyyyyy do you wanna know?” “NO REASON!” I blurt out, then cover my mouth, completely red-faced. Well, so much for discretion. Desperate to escape the awkwardness, I stammer, “I-I-I-I-I’M GOING- to go get some, uh, cider. Be right back!” I power-walk through the crowd, passing by Shyren and her band. Right now they’re performing “Levitating” by Dua Lipa, and I can feel the beat reverberating down into my bones. Shyren’s voice is beautiful. Truthfully, I’m not going to the food table. I’m going to step outside and get some fresh air to cool myself down. The doors are wide open, and I quickly dart out and step over beside the building, where I’m out of sight. This is a good, private place to catch my breath. After having a few minutes to calm down, I muster up my willpower again and mount the stairs back to the door. I step back inside, blinded for a moment by the contrast of the lights from the dusky evening. “...Eliza?” A voice from behind catches me severely off-guard, and I nearly trip in my heels. Whirling around, I anxiously look to see whose voice I heard. Mettaton is standing in the doorway, one hand in his hair, a look of incredulity on his face. He seems completely stunned by something, his cheeks alight and his eyes huge and shining. I find myself gawking too. He looks… amazing. The dark fuschia tuxedo, the pale rose tucked into the chest pocket, the way his hair has been done, the look on his face, is all just… I mean… WOW. I can’t even speak for a few seconds before I regain my composure. “Mettaton! Thank God, there you are.” He seems speechless for a moment too, before he steps forward, beaming more happily than I’ve ever seen him, and takes my hands in both his. “Darling, you look… I don’t even know how to describe it! Radiant, beautiful, show-stopping, breathtaking, stunning… Beyond words! Oh, dear, am I flattering you too much?” he suddenly gasps as my face goes completely red and I start hyperventilating. “Deep breaths, darling. Deep breaths.” I shake my head quickly to clear my thoughts, then look up at his shining face, even more anxious than before. “Sorry, I hope I didn’t worry you just now. You also look… like… God help me find the right words,” I laugh in my apprehension, my words trailing off. “Uh, sorry, you look amazing.” “It’s alright, darling. I know what you meant to say.” He looks at me with something in his eyes that I can’t quite recognize, but then suddenly glances over his shoulder as someone outside calls his name. “Oh, dear…” he sighs. “Looks like I’m needed again. The work is never over, is it? But I wish I could just stay here and spend time with you…” “Hey, if there’s work that needs to be done, don’t let me pull you away from it,” I say, trying to be reassuring. “I’ve already found everyone I know, so don’t worry about me being alone.” He smiles, relieved. “Well, that’s a weight off my shoulders. I need to go take care of all this junk now, but I’ll be free near the end of the night. In the meantime, enjoy the party, darling!” I giggle. “Of course, Mettaton. Thank you.” ♡ Music: "Levitating" by Dua Lipa, piano cover by The Theorist on YouTube Art and writing by me!! All Undertale content and characters belong to Toby Fox.
