I feel my own turn pink as I process what she just said. “...A dance?” I finally reply. “Like, a slow dance?” “Um… If you want- I mean, yes.” She nods decisively, as if encouraging herself. “Yes. I want to dance with you, Mettaton. Will you?” I step towards her, dumbfounded. “I thought you were too nervous to dance, darling…” “Well… out here, no one would-- I mean, we’re out of sight. I don’t have to… to worry about being seen.” She takes a few deep breaths to steady herself, then looks at me again. “Admittedly, I’m still nervous… But I want to do it. A lot.” I hesitate for a moment, stunned. Earlier this evening, Eliza looked more radiant than anyone else I’d ever seen. Her hair pulled gently back so her face was more visible, her skin glowing, dressed in a sage gown fit for a princess. When I saw her, everything else seemed to vanish… But right now, I’m more awestruck by her than ever. Finally, I give her an enormous smile, nodding eagerly. “YES! Yes, of course I’ll dance with you, Eliza! Yes. I would love to.” Great, now I’M stumbling over my words. It doesn’t matter, anyway. She seems completely taken aback. “You will?” Her eyes are huge with disbelief, still shining a little with tears. I laugh, delighted. “Absolutely! I’ve been wanting to do it all evening. I just didn’t think you’d ask.” Eliza stares at me in stunned silence. “I… had no idea,” she finally whispers, before smiling shyly. “Okay. Uh… cool.” The band starts up a new song. I can hear Shyren’s voice float out onto the balcony as it begins. “I used to hear a simple song, That was, until you came along… Now in its place is something new, I hear it when I look at you…” “I Hear a Symphony,” by Cody Fry. I couldn’t imagine a better song to dance with my Eliza to. “Well, then, my dear, shall we?” I take her hand in my own and gently press a kiss to her knuckles, and I can see out of the corner of my eye that she’s entirely red. Before she can respond, I lightly guide her arms up around my neck, and then place mine around her waist. Eliza looks completely shocked. I don’t think she expected things to go this far, but there’s no way we’re backing down now. As the piano starts to swell, I lead her in a gentle sway from side to side. It’s simple enough, and she quickly adjusts to the rhythm, leaning closer as she becomes more comfortable. “...This isn’t so hard,” she murmurs to herself, a small smile playing on her face. As more instruments join in, I let her follow me in a simple pattern across the balcony, our path illuminated by the soft light streaming through the curtain. “You’re a natural,” I remark happily, and she beams. Shyren begins singing again… “With simple songs I wanted more, Perfection is so quick to bore… You are more beautiful by far, Our flaws are who we really are.” Eliza lets out a small squeak of surprise as I hold her hand in the air and spin her around once, and then she plummets into me, unable to regain her balance. We both laugh and keep going, now moving in full sync with the patterns of the music. I spin her again, and this time she simply giggles in delight. The music seems to quiet briefly, and as it does, Eliza timidly nuzzles her face against my shoulder, a look of contentment on her face. I nearly fall over in shock, my cheeks bright pink by now. But at the same time, I love seeing her like this… Happy, nuzzled up against me. It just feels right. A swell of the music follows, and we can feel the climax coming. Eliza’s face lights up as it does, and in my joy, I hold her waist and lift her up in the air above me, revelling in her startled laughter and bright smile. “I used to hear a simple song, That was, until you came along… You took my broken melody, And now I hear a symphony…” I twirl around, holding Eliza in my arms up in the air, and she holds on to me for security, laughing like I’ve never seen her laugh. Forget earlier at the beginning of the ball. THIS is the most beautiful she’s ever been. Looking at her like this, and just being with her, hearing her laugh… It's like the rest of the world just completely falls away.
^^ READ INSTRUCTIONS SECTION FIRST ^^ Something happens, however, that I barely notice. Her prosthetic leg slips through my grasp, and her delighted laughter changes to a startled gasp as she topples over. Her weight sends me tumbling to the ground, and she lands on top of me, her face hidden by her hair. A moment later she pushes her hair out of the way and looks at me, her eyes wide with alarm, both at her sudden fall and our close proximity. Her face is only a few inches from mine, but in the moment, we simply stare at each other in our surprise for a few seconds, before exploding with startled laughs. The music begins to die down again as we calm ourselves, and I sit up, so that Eliza is now… on my lap? Well, that worked out, I suppose. Shyren’s voice softly brings out the last line of the song. “And now I hear… a symphony…” I find myself staring at Eliza’s face, lost in it. Unconsciously, I tuck some of her hair back behind her ear and gently hold her cheek with my hand. Now she’s staring back in both anticipation and wonder. I notice that her gaze keeps briefly flicking slightly down. Her hands find their way to my shoulders as we grow closer, the tension of the moment nearing its peak. With my free hand, I lightly take her chin, tilting it up towards me so our lips are level. I’m about to ask for permission when she leans in closer, cutting me off. In my rush of excitement, I hold her face in both my hands and gently pull her in as both our eyes flutter shut. Our lips meet softly and slowly, and an explosion of pure joy and love fills my soul as they do. Hers feel warm and soft against my smooth, cool skin. She tilts her head slightly, leaning in further, and my hands move to her waist to hold her tight. I’ve waited for this moment for so long, and now… Eliza pulls away to breathe for a second. She stares at me in wonder, as if she needs to confirm what just happened, and I nod quickly, eyeing her lips again. With a small smile, she suddenly tugs on my shoulders, pulling me in for another kiss. Her arms wrap around my neck, and mine around her waist, holding her close, like I never want to let go. “I… I’ve wanted to do that for so long,” I whisper when she pulls away again, her cheeks flushed. “I don’t... know what to say. I never realized…” A moment passes before the shock begins to sink in, and Eliza goes completely beet red, more than I’ve ever seen her. She tries to speak, I think, but no words come out. I chuckle at her demeanor, then plant a light kiss on her cheek to quiet her. “It’s okay. You don’t need to say anything.” She finally seems a little calmer, until something catches her eye. Her face goes from red to pale as she stares at something over my shoulder. “M… Mettaton…?” she whimpers, pointing behind me. Confused, I follow her gaze to the curtain to the ballroom. “What’s wrong?” It only takes a second for me to notice it. The camera pointed at the two of us from next to the curtain, in the hands of an awestruck news reporter. ♡ Did you really think I would let you guys be happy? You fool. You simpleton.
