Officially know as The Truth and Reconciliation day this day honours survivors of residential schools and those who did not come home. The story behind the orange shirt is that on her first day of school Phyllis Webstad (a residential school survivor) wore an orange shirt given to her by her Grandmother. When she got to school they took away her orange shirt and she never saw it again. (here's a link to a more detailed explanation in Phyllis' own words https://www.orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.html ) Residential schools were schools for Indigenous people. But these schools would try to change their culture and take away their identities.
