Cat by day… also cat by night… Muffin sighed. She was beginning to think that she would never catch the little red dot. It was always one step ahead of her, somehow. It didn’t help that every time she failed, the two children of the family would erupt in uproarious laughter from their position on the sofa. It was humiliating. The sound of soft pawsteps, along with a faintly lavender-y scent, announced the arrival of Muffin’s sister, Mittens. Mittens was a tabby, like muffin, but with green eyes instead of blue. She was a little taller and leaner than her sister, and her fur was short and sleek. Muffin was just a ball of fluff. Mittens stopped when she saw the scene in front of her. Kids in fits of laughter on the sofa whilst Muffin crouched on the floor, fuming. “What’s wrong, sister? You look mad…” Mittens had concern in her voice, but also a hint of amusement. Muffin did not like that. “If you must know, it’s because I am forever failing to catch that red dot.” Muffin said, glaring at Mittens. She always acted so grown up, as if she knew everything. It could really get on a cat’s nerves sometimes. “Oh, silly, you must know why!” Muffin growled softly. “Tell me, oh great knowledgeable one.” “It’s a laser pointer, dear! The children hold it and it projects a beam of red light. You could never catch it, as it isn’t solid and thus impossible to-“ Muffin cut her off. “Okay, thank you for telling me. You can go away now.” Mittens laughed and padded out. Muffin whipped around to glare at the children. “You”, she growled, “have done enough wrong for one morning. Go… I dunno, go- go do something else!” The children looked at the glaring kitten and dissolved into giggles once more. Muffin walked over to her bed and curled up. Perhaps a nap would help things.
