Use the shovel to destroy grass so the blocks get placed correctly. Use the "Destroy" (D) button to gather grass you've placed, trees, saplings, and logs. Now you can chop down trees using this "Destroy" button and gather logs! You can walk around grass, but you cannot walk through trees and logs!
