Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African-American culture. It is observed from December 26 to January 1, and it culminates in a communal feast called Karamu on the sixth day. The word Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” or first fruits, referring to the agricultural harvest festivals that are found throughout Africa. Umoja (oo-MO-jah) is unity. Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chah-GOO-lee-ah) is self-determination. Ujima (oo-JEE-mah) is collective work and responsibility. Ujamaa (oo-jah-MAH-ah) is cooperative economics. Nia (NEE-ah) is purpose (the building and developing of the community). Kuumba (koo-OOM-bah) is creativity. Imani (ee-MAH-nee) is faith.
