"-"Why do goldfish need a lot of room?"- 1.Goldfish are messy fish and produce a lot of waste, which makes a lot ammonia in your 'tank'. Ammonia can kill your fish quickly. One reason a bowl isn't recommended is because they're hard to keep clean or filter. 2.Common Goldfish(Feeder fish, Fair Fish) can grow over one foot long and require AT LEAST 20 Gallons for ONE fish. Fancy Goldfish require at least 10 gallons for one fish. A bowl is much too cramped for them. Also, it stunts their growth. Meaning their body wont grow because their home is too small, but their internal organ continue to grow, causing them to become cramped and squished within the fishes body. If the ammonia doesn't kill them, stunting surely will. -- -"Why should I care? It's just a stupid fish.."- Goldfish are capable of living for a long time, but most people think goldfish are 'trash pets' and don't take proper care of them. You get them, keep them in a bowl for a few weeks expecting them to die soon, they die of course(as planned) and you can just throw them in a toilet and be done with it. Well, if you ask me that is a horrid way to think of a goldfish..or any animal for that manner. Goldfish are living creatures, just like you and me, and they don't deserve to die because of our ignorance. Oh, and just to clear up a myth that everyone seems to think is true..GOLDFISH ARE NOT STUPID! And they don't have a 3 second memory! If goldfish had a 3 second memory they would be incapable of doing basic things that allow them to survive. My goldfish know when it's time to eat every day(if anything they remind me when to feed them!), they recognize me when I walk in the room, have been taught to eat out of my hands, and some people have even taught their goldies how to do tricks! Goldfish are far from stupid." - deviantART user Scattered-Stamps I did not wright this.
