⠀ ↱˳⸙ ⌨︎∗: @aspiring- ⁱˢ ᵗʸᵖⁱⁿᵍ··· i’ve been kind of wanting to make this for a little while, and i finally am, haha. i’m just going to be talking about double trouble, the reptilian humanoid in heels from netflix’s she-ra reboot, what i think about them as a character, and the representation of non binary people given. ⠀ ↳ ❝ !! disclaimer !! ❞ ⇢ these are just my opinions on the topic. and it’s completely okay if you disagree, have different opinions, etc. it’d be awesome if you wanted to comment your opinion on this matter, because i’d love to hear it, as long as you’re being respectful of my views as well <3 ⇢ i am non binary myself, so all this is coming from an nb person. ⠀ ↳ ❝ rant... ❞ ⇢ first off, who is double trouble? for those of who you haven’t seen she-ra, double trouble is a morally gray shapeshifter who frequently switches sides between the horde and the rebellion, changing based on which will benefit themself the most. they are sort of a performer, being able to wear the appearance of other people thanks to their shapeshifting ability, and seems to regard impersonating others as a bit of a hobby and skill. ⇢ what did i like about them? i honestly found their character enjoyable. they were fun, added a bit of mystery to the series, and generally spiced it up. their personality was unique, and they were honestly rather iconic. ⇢ what didn’t i like about them? i would have liked it if double trouble had been portrayed as more /human/. all the other character more closely resembled humans as seen on earth, while double trouble was much more reptilian and alien. they also happened to be the only nb character. and it can be assumed that they weren’t nb because of how they identified, they were nb because of their species and shapeshifting ability. ⇢ so.. were they good rep? my opinion on this is that they weren’t /horrible/ rep. but could they have been better? yes. ⇢ what was good about the rep they provided? she-ra creators represented the non binary gender, which isn’t something we see a lot of. kudos to them for helping us genderqueer people see a character like ourselves in the media <3 double trouble was a likable character, and a lot of the fans instantly took to them (though if i’m being honest, i think that’s partly because double trouble is non-binary and the viewers were so desperate for genderqueer rep they'll just take whatever they're given). their personality was fun and individual. they weren’t just one of those genderqueer characters who makes a brief appearance, and then disappears (i’ve seen this happen before), they were important to the series, and continuously made appearances. ⇢ what wasn’t so good about the rep they provided? well, i feel like a shortcut to nb rep that’s taken a lot is making the non binary character(s) a different, less human, species. this isn’t exactly a problem, i guess, but it becomes annoying after being used so much. can’t we see a non binary character who is non binary because of how they identify? and while i understand and know that every character needs flaws, it also seems like they, the only non binary character in the series, had a /lot/ of flaws compared to some of the characters inside the gender binary. specifically moral flaws. they were greedy, cared seemingly only about money, and would betray people who (kind of) trusted them for something that would better benefit themself. all this seems to be sending a negative message about non binary people. ⇢ all in all.. at the end of the day, double trouble and she-ra’s nb rep remains a somewhat controversial topic. some fans think they were awesome rep, others do not. everyone’s opinions are valid. personally, i think the rep they brought was more negative than positive, but i still appreciate the effort that was put into representing non binaries by the she-ra creators <3 ⠀ ↳ ❝ a small ✨ m e s s a g e ✨ ❞ ⇢ if you’d like me to make more projects/rants like this, let me know in the comments! you can also suggest other topics you’d like to see me talk about and i’ll see what i can do :) ⠀ ↳ ❝ credits ❞ ⇢ thumbnail image not by me ⇢ description layout by me ⠀ ↳ ❝ tags ❞ ⇢
